Sapphire - chavvy or posh?

Debating the name Sapphire with a friend, she puts it firmly in the 'Chardonnay' camp and I consider it posh, more akin to Cordelia or Jacinta. What do you think?

Didn't Martin Lewis call his daughter Sapphire.

Sisi13 · 29/04/2015 21:42

Just googled it. He did! He's posh.

Bluepetra · 30/04/2015 00:00

Topaz, there's another similar one.

TheCraicDealer · 30/04/2015 00:17

I know an Emerald. If you called her posh she'd punch you in the tit.

HellKitty · 30/04/2015 03:10

What about Samphire? That's quite posh. In fish eating circles..Wink

Marcipex · 30/04/2015 17:52

I know a Sapphira, I'd say they were aspirational rather than posh.
However, most people mishear it as Sophia anyway. Other children call her Sophy.

BlackberryandNettle · 01/05/2015 21:25

Sapphira, nick name Sapphie - could be posh?

SirChenjin · 01/05/2015 21:42

Sapphira - like the Vauxhall? Grin

PatriciaHolm · 01/05/2015 21:43

If you'd read Billionaire Boy you wouldn't be asking...(it's not flattering...)

I know a dog called Sapphire.

Nice dog though.

cocacola1006 · 01/05/2015 23:13

See I would say it was swinging towards the posh but I'm clearly a minority. Maybe Saphira or Sephy I'm not sure what else is similar but with a different perception. What did you decide?!

Hakluyt · 01/05/2015 23:28

I am very posh indeed. Sapphire is not a posh name. Neither is Saphira or Saphie. Honestly. They are what Hyacinth Bucket thinks is posh.

Saffron nn Saffy might hit the biill but be more arty middle/class/posh than Sapphire.

OVienna · 02/05/2015 00:17

Please, I beg you OP, you are Kate Middleton aren't you?!

CumbrianExile · 02/05/2015 00:23

Pretty unanimous op. But I would also consider Jacinta chavvy and you think its posh so what do I know!

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 02/05/2015 00:28

I think it's a beautiful name!

Lots of people probably think it's common/ chavvy (can't stand that word), I think they are mean spirited!

Elizabethtailored · 02/05/2015 18:35

Are you sure you have not misheard and is SophiA? Pronounced So - fi (to rhyme with tie) - a??

Stitchintime1 · 02/05/2015 18:38

Despite being a jewel name, it does have different socio-economic connotations to Ruby or Pearl. So does Diamond. Not sure why.

Hakluyt · 02/05/2015 18:56

It's odd, isn't it? Ruby and Pearl are now completely different socioeconomic groups to Diamond and Sapphire. But not long ago, Ruby and Pearl were definitely kitchen maids with their friend Beryl. Diamond and Sapphire have always been what Ruby and Pearl called themselves when they became chorus girls.........

ancientbuchanan · 02/05/2015 19:21

Sapphira is at least biblicaL. There is an unfortunate story: she and her husband Ananias lied and came to a Bad End.

I've always thought that Emerald was a social climber's name and was delighted to be proved right when I discovered that Emerald Cunard had chosen it as she didn't like her original one.

I'm sorry, I still think of Ruby and Pearl and Beryl in those terms, even though I know people with those names who are def. not house maids. Ellen also. Elsie on the edge.

Stitchintime1 · 02/05/2015 19:24

Not sure where Topaz fits in . I think I once had a pony and doll set and the horse was called Topaz.

Stitchintime1 · 02/05/2015 19:25

Opal?

ancientbuchanan · 02/05/2015 19:26

Soph-I- a,
Mar-I- a.
The ee sound was foreign and suspect in my youth. I went to a school with a lot of sophy/sophies with handles and they were all Soph-I- a.

My granny and my other granny's mates were Mar-I-as.

But it was never Victor I a....
