Sapphire - chavvy or posh?

Debating the name Sapphire with a friend, she puts it firmly in the 'Chardonnay' camp and I consider it posh, more akin to Cordelia or Jacinta. What do you think?

Is it not akin to Emerald, and therefore potentially posh?
It's weird because the poshest (old money-type posh) couple I know have a daughter called Sapphire. They are so posh they won't care what anyone thinks of their name choices though Wink.

No, not posh.

Ruby is the only gemstone that might cut it.

How about Sophia?

I think it would sit better as a middle name.

Say:
Julia Sapphire Surname
Carla Sapphire Surname

Serephine would be another good alternative.

Interestingly it sounds quite similar to the traditional English pronunciation of Sophia. (So-FYE-a)

Its Chavvy I'm afraid

There's always saphira if you're so struck on that sound. My baby will be named saffron and I love it.

But surely that's a car?

Oh yeah, haha.

I know a middle class Saphire. Her sisters are Satine and Scarlet.

Sapphire, sorry, not Saphire.

I quite like it - I know someone quite posh (director at our firm) who called their daughter it. Maybe if someone chavvier had called her daughter that I wouldn't have liked it as much.

I think that's fairly unanimous, OP. Adding my own two pence worth, it's not your typical upper class name.

Report
reuset · 29/04/2015 20:26

Though I'd be loathe to label any name, or thing 'chavvy'.

Report
reuset · 29/04/2015 20:27

Or loath even, though either would do

I'm pretty sure Jacinta and Cordelia are also in the same bracket as sapphire ....

Report
reuset · 29/04/2015 20:33

Why so, poocatcher? Just out of interest

I know a very old lady called Diamond and she is anything but chavvy.

Think I prefer Emerald to Sapphire, think Diamond is lovely though

usualsuspect333 · 29/04/2015 20:33

Any name that isn't boring is considered chavvy on MN.

You want posh, how about Samphire? :o

Or at least, aspiring middle class...

Another one saying it's the kind of stage name picked by an 'exotic dancer'.

I really like it. Blush My DC have classic names, I wish I had been a bit more adventurous.

Sapphires are beautiful.

If you had a posh surname it might make it sound posh too. Eg Sapphire Atherton-Jones sounds posh to me.
