Still struggling with girl's names!

Nannynome · 25/04/2015 22:46

DS1 is called Robin. His little sister is turning up in a few months and we have some names but I want Mumsnet opinions on them please :)

Ivy - a bit worried it is popular at the min, have people come across many of them?
Lyra - same as above
Juno
Wren - can we have 2 bird names??
Elodie - I can't decide on this one whether she would spend her whole life saying not Melody to people!
Kira

Any help and thoughts appreciated!

I love elodie, really pretty, Eloise was on our list As well, I like Lyra too (was also on our list as was robin but for a girl so we must have similar tastes) my baby turned out to be a boy though so we didn't use any!

PinkPearlClutcher · 25/04/2015 22:51

They're all beautiful but a big NO to wren. Sorry, id think you were a bit weird

Heels99 · 25/04/2015 22:54

There have been two threads this week about Juno and Lyra already so obviously becoming popular.

robin and wren combo is so twee it makes my teeth itch, 2 children named after little birds.

Do you have any other ideas?

calzone · 25/04/2015 22:56

Wren would be better if you didn't have Robin but is too awful with Robin!

Robin & Grace

Robin and Erin

Robin & Beatrice

timelyreminder · 26/04/2015 00:02

Ivy or Wren.

I don't know any little Ivys or Lyras. Juno and Elodie are often suggested on MN but I've never met anyone with those names. I think Wren is a very nice nature name and wouldn't think it was odd, but perhaps not such a good idea as you already have a Robin. Not keen on Kira.

cece · 26/04/2015 00:05

From your list I like Kira or Elodie best. Definitely not Wren when you already have a Robin.

How about

Verity
Una
Thea

burgatroyd · 26/04/2015 04:55

I don't know any Ivys but too close sound wise to Evie.

Wren is my fave but too much with Robin.

That leaves Juno as my top choice!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 26/04/2015 06:03

Definitely not Wren!
I wouldn't go with Ivy either.

Elodie gets my vote.

Nannynome · 26/04/2015 07:27

Yes, Wren was an outsider due to it being on last time's list before DS was an S :) annoying because it is a lovely name but we didn't think this far ahead!
Last time we shortlisted to about 3 names and then met him before deciding so that's what we are trying to do this time. We are finding girls names so much more difficult! I can't decide whether it is because we already have 1 and therefore are also trying to make them work together or just because girls names are more difficult.

I like Elodie best from your list.

Definitely not Wren when you already have a Robin.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 26/04/2015 07:47

I like Ivy from your list.

What about Hazel?

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 26/04/2015 07:51

I know 8 Lyra's born since Christmas...
Ivy is lovely. Also love Elodie. Don't like Juno or wren.

IsItUnusual · 26/04/2015 10:04

As others have said, I think Wren is too much if you already have a Robin!

Names I like from your list are:

Ivy
Elodie

Names I am neutral towards:

Lyra
Juno

Names I am not keen on (considering you have a Robin):

Kira
Wren

You might also like:

Vera
Eloise
June
Claire

I don't think you have to worry about your name choices being too popular. Some are rising in popularity but I can't see there being more than one or two in a classroom, they're not exactly Jack and Sophie levels of popularity. Smile

Nannynome · 26/04/2015 11:24

8 Lyras! Where are you based in the country, North or South? Ivy was at 66th in the country in 2013 which was what has been putting me off a bit, think I may be being daft though. We like Ivy with Elinor as a middle name.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/04/2015 11:29

No to Wren with Robin. Tbh Robin is such a brilliant boys' name and I'm not convinced that any of your suggestions are as good as it.

Don't like Ivy.
Juno just sounds a bit try hard and copying the film.

Don't like Elodie (actually prefer Melody tbh but wouldn't use it)
Don't like Kira much.

Elinor is lovely - how about that as a first name?

ICanTotallyDance · 26/04/2015 11:30

Ivy Elinor is lovely OP

Robin and Ivy sounds very nice together as well.

mysteryfairy · 26/04/2015 11:30

Don't have Ivy! It would sound like you had Christmas themed your children.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/04/2015 11:30

A flower name would be nice with Robin.

Violet?
Daisy?
Iris? Not terribly fond of it myself, but it sounds nice with Robin.
Lily?

ICanTotallyDance · 26/04/2015 11:30

Or Elinor Ivy, actually, that's lovely too.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 26/04/2015 12:14

I'm in the South west but know them from all around... A couple locally, a friend in Leeds, a couple in the midlands... Just seems to be the up and coming name at the moment!

MrsHenryCrawford · 26/04/2015 12:19

Elodie is lovely

Ivy makes me think of the beano character. How about iris?

When is nice but but too much with Robin

BellaVida · 26/04/2015 12:32

Elodie is my favourite out of your list. Beautiful name!

Have you considered Eveline? It means 'little bird', so links with Robin.

Nannynome · 26/04/2015 12:35

I hadn't thought about Christmas with Ivy and Robin together Shock Robin came from Kermit the Frog's nephew (he was called tadpole whilst inside of me! This one is currently called jellybean lol) and have always liked it as a name. Argh this is difficult this time round.

OP posts:
SingingHinnies · 26/04/2015 12:52

Ivy - nice
Lyra - sounds like Lycra
Juno - no
Wren - nice
Elodie - Fave off list, although i have a kid who has to constantly spell her name and hates it, Irish name in England although Elodie sounds less of a problem
Kira no

Some unusual name's i can think of

Romilly ive got one but shes not a baby, never met another in RL, no others in primary or senior school
Romille Romy etc
Ethne, an old name no one uses
Thomasena/Thomasina/Thomasene NN Ena/Ina
Melissa - No one seems to use this any more but i think it's lovely
Luella
Maida
Wilone
Etta/Ettie/Etty
Hazel

OneMagnumisneverenough · 26/04/2015 13:05

Ivy -never liked it, it's a bit Coronation street to me
Lyra - quite nice (could be called Lyra the Liar?)
Juno - quite like it but prefer June - not used a lot now so a bit different
Wren - Weird with Robin plus it's the name of a kitchen company
Elodie - always sounds like someone spelling something out L.O.D...
Kira - would spell Keira or Ciara but not sure it's the same style as Robin.

Based on the above i'd suggest:

June
Eden
Carla or Clara
Heather
Eleanora (Norah)
Lilian
