Or similar?

Why are boys names harder to pick than girls?

I found boys names hard largely because they're pretty boring and largely haven't changed for 30 years or more.

For example, I know numerous men named Ben, Daniel and Sam ranging from 18 to 35. There are also at least two of each in DD's ore school class. Throw in some other standards like William, James and Oliver and they all become a bit beige.

If I were going for one of those names I would like a reason - perhaps a family connection.

My favorite is Ben. All 3 are popular!
Similar names:
Tom
John
James
Alex
Jake
similar but less popular now
Michael (my favorite!)
Andrew
Luke

Yes, I'd be looking to the less fashionable classics like John, Michael, Andrew, Anthony, David, Mark etc.

ArcheryAnnie · 22/04/2015 12:32

I love all of those three! Also in the same vein Tom, Joe, Michael. (Not Mike, though.)

Heels99 · 22/04/2015 12:33

Daniel.

Ben and Sam are too common for boys and dogs and too boring.

Bowlersarm · 22/04/2015 12:34

I like them all but Daniel/Dan is my favourite.

Joe/Joseph
Will/William
Matt/Matthew
Nick/Nicholas
Rob/Robbie/Robert

Heels I chose a really common name (not any on this list) and love that it's common. It doesn't put any expectations on how people expect DS to be because of his name (he's not a Tristran or a Darren or an Osama) and it means that if he wants to be google-able, he's going to have to work hard at it!

princessdave · 22/04/2015 14:48

Daniel. Love it and would have had it on our list except DHs best friend is a Daniel!

timelyreminder · 22/04/2015 15:02
  1. Daniel
  2. Sam
  3. Ben

Would you always use the short forms of Sam and Ben, or would Sam be a Samuel/Samson or Ben a Bejamin/Benedict?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 22/04/2015 15:47

Daniel - fab name!

Ben is ok (I like Benedict).

Sam I've always found a bit 'wet', not sure why?!

Lilybensmum1 · 22/04/2015 15:52

My DS is Ben, even though my dh had a dog called Ben. I love the name we too struggled with boys names and this one just felt right. There are not loads of Ben's at my DS school.

Daniel will surely get shortened to Dan but that is also a nice name, Sam is sweet but also can be a girls name!

Good luck op only you can decide.

SunnyBaudelaire · 22/04/2015 15:58

sorry but Ben and Sam sound like dog's names.
What about some of the old classics like Anthony or Simon?

GlitzAndGigglesx · 22/04/2015 16:02

I like Daniel, but find Sam and Ben such dull names

Fattycow · 22/04/2015 16:04

Samuel!

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2015 16:07

Daniel

CPtart · 22/04/2015 16:41

I love Ben. It was on our shortlist. We have an Adam and a Luke. I also liked Isaac, Zachary, Marcus, Dominic and Edward.

EssexMummy123 · 22/04/2015 16:49

Lol so no clear winner then but Daniel and Ben seem to come out slightly ahead of Sam.

Agree, boys names are so much harder than girls! And there's much less variation somehow. We're having real trouble with deciding on a name for DS1 due in 7 weeks. Anyway. All three names are fine, if fairly uneventful (which is also fine if that's what you want!). Would probably go:
Daniel
Ben
Sam

Good luck!

Allthatnonsense · 22/04/2015 22:37

Sam
