Claudia 8 (despite the fact that it means 'lame')

Meredith 0 (Welsh surname, not at all femimine IMHO)

OP, surely you shouldn't have told posters that Helena is your control as people can cheat and score Helena higher in order to get their scores weighted in favour of their higher scored names. The control should be blinded.

TremoloGreen · 20/04/2015 12:11

Sorry, I realise people are still scoring them - I haven't been adding to the analysis since I 'unblinded', although the control was never fully blinded anyway as we all knew Helena was the weighting factor - it wasn't really a very well designed experiment - there are quite a few more fatal flaws, such as a lack of any valid basis for the assumptions I've based the weighting on, it's more a bit of fun. Yes, this is my idea of fun Grin. Seeing as people have made the effort to keep scoring, I may still add them in, but will then separate the analyses into a pre- and post-blind phases, a bit like open-label phases in clinical trials, they still provide useable data. Also you can run analyses to see if unblinding affected the scoring of Helena and then either draw conclusions with that in mind, or design or a more copex post-hoc analysis to account for it.

By eyeballing the data, Martha, Phoebe and Elizabeth are the front-runners. For those who asked, Martha is Andy Burnham, if he had won Grin

Also, having studied a bit of Latin and Ancient Greek at school, I'm not sure that I buy the Claudia = lame and Thea = Goddess. Probably both close, maybe even correct, but it's a biiit of a simplification of Latin/Greek (and where they intersect) etymology and history to suppose the meanings are that clear cut Confused but I'm sure all the Latin/ A. Greek experts on this thread knew that anyway and were just simplifying things for me.

What's the result if you only count posts which scored Helena and were posted prior to your unblinding on Thursday 16th at 18:40 OP?

TremoloGreen · 20/04/2015 17:46

Enrique, those are the last graphs I posted. Might try and do some more crunching tonight, but have quite a lot of paid-for analysis to get out of the way first!

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 20/04/2015 21:57

Aaah right. With all the cross posting and further replies I wasn't clear.
All data apart what's the short shortlist now in the TG house?

TremoloGreen · 20/04/2015 23:56

Well, it's been a very useful exercise. Our current shortlist, in order of preference, is:

Phoebe Elizabeth
Elizabeth Ruth
Martha Elizabeth

But we have another few months to thrash it out! ;-)

Smugnogplease · 21/04/2015 16:06

Rosalind
Meredith
Elizabeth all 8/10
Helena 7/10

CruCru · 21/04/2015 19:24

Frieda - 2
Claudia - 10 (DD is called this)
Tabitha - 1
Rosalind - 10 (was on my list, sounds rotten with my surname)
Meredith - 2
Elizabeth - 10
Thea - 3
Phoebe - 5
Martha - 5

newtothenet · 21/04/2015 19:46

I wonder whether there are any names which scored a lot of 5's and, if so, how they placed when compared to some of the more controversial names which scored a lot of 0's and a lot of 10's. And is it be better to chose a name which most people see as average, or a marmite name which is equally loved and hated? (Although, obviously, it's your baby so as long as you're happy the maths is irrelevant.)

TremoloGreen · 21/04/2015 20:24

Hmmm, all these sub-analyses, I should have put the data into MatLab, not vastly-inferior Excel!
