I like Alys, but she'll spend her whole life having to spell it to people.

ImperialBlether · 15/04/2015 16:50

Alice.

Is Alys even a name?

Sirzy · 15/04/2015 16:51

Alice.

I thought the same as imperial.

Madamecastafiore · 15/04/2015 16:51

Alice.

PotteringAlong · 15/04/2015 16:51

Alice.

SkaterRobot · 15/04/2015 16:52

I think Alys is the Welsh version. I love it and considered it. But we're Welsh. I think English people might struggle with the pronunciation - Al-ees?

PontyGirl · 15/04/2015 16:54

Alice!

but I really do think it will be the next royal baby name!

Ludways · 15/04/2015 16:55

Alice. I know that Alys is a perfectly reasonable spelling though.

ThursdayLast · 15/04/2015 16:56

Alice unless you're Welsh.

TywysogesGymraeg · 15/04/2015 17:00

Ditto.
Never use forrin names unless you're forrin. It's stupid at best and pretentious at worst (or vice versa).

eae123 · 15/04/2015 17:02

What about Alyce, Friends DD spells Alice like this

SprungHasSpring · 15/04/2015 17:06

Alice looks much nicer IMHO.

I too would put money on the imminent royal baby being an Alice.

BrightenMyNorthernSky · 15/04/2015 17:10

I think Alys if you are Welsh, and Alice if you're not.

Highlandbird · 15/04/2015 17:11

I think the same, Alys only if you're welsh!

rockinrobintweet · 15/04/2015 20:09

absolutely Alice.

who the f* is Alys?!

rockinrobintweet · 15/04/2015 20:09

forgot my Wink

IvoryMadonna · 15/04/2015 21:44

Alys is an old English spelling. I like it.

Allthatnonsense · 15/04/2015 22:44

Alice, unless you are Welsh.

IvoryMadonna · 16/04/2015 00:24

Why do people say "only if you are Welsh"? The Welsh form of Alice is Alis.

You can find the spelling Alys in many old English parish registers.

ems1910 · 16/04/2015 00:27

I prefer Alice but either is fine!

squoosh · 16/04/2015 00:55

Alys looks so much prettier but would be a pain in the bahookie to constantly spell.

NadiaWadia · 16/04/2015 05:16

Agree with Ivory - the Alys spelling is not 'forrin'.

The heroine of this Philippa Gregory book, set in Tudor times, is where I remember it from best:

www.amazon.co.uk/Wise-Woman-Philippa-Gregory-ebook/dp/B005Z4SJWC/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1429157465&sr=1-1&keywords=the+wise+woman+philippa+gregory

Having said that, I think I prefer Alice on the whole.

Duckdeamon · 16/04/2015 05:20

Alys seems pretentious and will be a pain for your DD to have to keep spelling for people.

Plonkysaurus · 16/04/2015 05:52

I love Alys, it's on our list.

But then I'm very pretentious.

Salene · 16/04/2015 06:08

Alice is alys even a word..?

I hate it when people take a normal name and spell it daft , what's the point.

Alice is alice
