What do people think of Cherie/Sheree?
Detailed thoughts, if possible.

Cherie makes me think of Cherie Blair. I've never seen it spelt the other way, I suppose I would wonder if it was a spelling mistake!

lloydlf33 · 15/04/2015 02:04

Awful sorry

KoalaDownUnder · 15/04/2015 02:48
  1. If you use it, please spell it Cherie.
  1. Please don't use it - it is dated and tacksville. It reminds me of the 70s, not in a good way. Sisters would be Chantelle and Deanne.
SisterNancySinatra · 15/04/2015 03:13

I'm thinking Cherie Blair or Sherie Hewson on Loose Women .

johendy · 15/04/2015 06:47

It's a nice enough name (spelt Cherie), but really dated. I wouldn't. ..

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 15/04/2015 07:01

I was at school with one in the early 80s, no idea how she spelled it though. Not keen but yes, I'd go for Cherie if anything.

burgatroyd · 15/04/2015 07:58

I wanted to be called this as a teenager.

Its very dated and not in a good way.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 15/04/2015 08:00

In theory it's ok with French pronunciation but loads of people pronounce it sherry which is awful. There is also obviously the cherie Blair connection. Sheree is just awful full stop.

sweetpeame · 15/04/2015 08:38

Oh dear, I really don't think Cherie is ready for a revival (ever?!), it sounds horribly dated. There are so many "unusual/different" names if that's what you're aiming for, I really wouldn't go with this. And it also reminds me of Cherie Blair...

hidingunderthebed · 15/04/2015 09:43

It is my name and I absolutely hate it, I truly debate changing it all the time it is 80's tastic I cringe slightly when I have to introduce myself to new people.

Branleuse · 15/04/2015 09:44

its nice

hidingunderthebed · 15/04/2015 09:45

Oh and it is mispronounced as Sherry/ Cherry all the time, so much so that I don't even bother correcting people and mine is spelt in the conventional way

FeijoaSundae · 15/04/2015 09:48

You would be way ahead of the curve. :)

IvoryMadonna · 15/04/2015 10:54

I think there was an actress in Emmerdale with the name Sheree. Can't remember the surnames but she married a footballer called Harry something. Age is eating away at my memory cells.

squoosh · 15/04/2015 11:04

My first thought was the Stevie Wonder song My Cherie Amour. But that was from his cheesy early career.

So Cherie seems a bit cheesy to me.

squoosh · 15/04/2015 11:05

I quite like Cherry though. Has a very different vibe I think.

1lov3comp5 · 15/04/2015 11:36

My DHs aunt is called Shireen which I think is much nicer albeit still dated...

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 15/04/2015 12:44

Congratulations anyway! Whatever name you choose.

IvoryMadonna · 15/04/2015 13:01

There's a character in Game Of Thrones called Shireen, so that may cause a bit of a comeback.

ragged · 15/04/2015 13:08

I worked with a lovely Sherry. The Cherie pronunciation flummoxes me (easily flummoxed, admittedly).

florascotia · 15/04/2015 13:40

Sherry is a drink.
Cherry is a fruit.
Cherie is French for 'dear' (the feminine form).

Shireen/Shirin is a Persian female name, from an ancient legend. It means 'sweet'.
Sharon is an ancient Biblical name - for a fertile piece of land, and for a plant, the 'rose of Sharon'. So far as I know, it was not often used as a female name until the 20th cent.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 15/04/2015 13:42

I think it sounds Chavee.

Sorry Blush

florascotia · 15/04/2015 14:35

There is also Cherida - and Cherith (another Biblical place name)

Cheryl is a 20th cent elaboration of Cherie.

And wasn't singer/actor Cher originally given the name 'Cherilyn' ?

IvoryMadonna · 15/04/2015 15:15

Cher, that's right. There was a Cherilyn at my school. I think there was a Cherolyn as well. 50s babies.

squoosh · 15/04/2015 15:17

Cherilyn reminds me of Sherilyn Fenn of Twin Peaks fame. She was so gorgeous, it's been years since I've heard of her.
