Popularity worry

Is Barnaby going to become the next Harry or similar popular name?

I really like it and are pretty much set, but have seen it mentioned a few times and I'm starting to worry we could end up with half a dozen in his school year!!!

No I don't think so.

Nice name though and I like the nicknames Barney/Barn.

There are some names mentioned loads on MN that you would assume are really popular but in reality are still fairly niche.

I don't think Barnaby is going to explode in popularity although there's no magic formula to indicate what names will become Top 10, so many factors involved.

I picked a name for DC1 that I was sure was obscure but I've seen his name mentioned quite a few times on here including a 'popular names for children atm' thread. Still I've only ever met one other in real life. I think it depends where you live.

No matter what name you call him (within reason) another one will pop up somewhere or someone will say they know lots of people with that name.

I wouldn't think it will be as popular as Harry, the only place I've ever come across it is on here! In saying that it's very hard to predict what will become top 10, top 20 etc. Unless you go for something very unheard of or unusual/obscure then there's always a risk I suppose. It also depends on what you define as "popular" - top 10, top 100? I've heard people say they would never give their DC a top 500 (!) name whereas others have no issue with a top 10 name they consider perfect for their child.

Astrid is mentioned on nearly every thread these days but I've checked and there were only 65 born in 2013. I suppose if there was a character called Astrid in Frozen II it might really skyrocket then.

I think I'm worried because my son has a name you would never think popular, similar to Barnaby in current obscurity.

Yet he arrived in reception with 3 children named the same!!

I think your right though, no way to tell really.
