Middle name for Oliver

I'm 35 weeks with DS1 and DH and I have decided on Oliver as a first name - I know many will consider it boring but we're not bothered about it's popularity.

We are having trouble picking a middle name. DH suggested using Noah, which was our second choice name, but I'm not sure whether it 'goes' given that both names end in a similar sound.

He's also suggested James which I like but feel may be too obvious.

Would appreciate any thoughts on these two or suggestions of alternatives. Last name is similar to Johnstone.

Oliver Noah is two 'a'-sound endings next to one another so it doesn't sound great.

Oliver Samuel Johnstone
Oliver William Johnstone
Oliver Michael Johnstone
Oliver Richard Johnstone

Something like that anyway - with Oliver you've got a name with a soft sound at the beginning and the end, so you want something stronger sounding for the middle name IMO.

Oliver James Johnstone is two J's next to each other (buy maybe your last name doesn't start with J?) FWIW I like Oliver James.

That's what I thought - it just doesn't sound right does it? Shame, it would be so much easier just to use number 1 and 2 names!

Any other suggestions?

Hang on to Noah for the next one ;)

I really like Richard. How about Howard or Leonard? Strong vowel sounds work well.

I thought James. I think it flows. I wouldn't worry too much about it being obvious because middle names aren't used in full that often.

I think you need something with a hard consonant sound in it.

Thanks, I like some of these so will put them to DH tonight. Interesting several people also thought James - do you think it matters that last name also begins with J?

Having spoken to DH we have narrowed options down to:

Oliver James
Oliver Lucas
Oliver Flynn

DH isn't as keen on James because our last name also starts with a J. I think the front runner is probably Flynn - any opinions on this?

WhatAHooHa , you've got both of my twin brothers first and middle names in that post!

I think Lucas and Flynn are both good if you're put off of James because your surname also begins with J.

TropicalHorse · 18/04/2015 14:01

My friend has an Oliver Charles which I think is quite nice, it's also a family name for them.
