Mabel or Maybelle or something else?

So Mabel was the fave of the three names (Vera and hyacinth) but does it sound like May Bull? Is Maybelle or Mabli better?

Any other similar names (not Maeby though)? Wink

Mabel lovely.

Maybelle is the name of a narrow boat.

Mabil is something you clean the loo with.

Just Mabel. No fancy spellings. It's fine.

But if you're still looking, what about Amabel? (It means lovable, and was the original 'long' form of Mabel, and is also the ancestor of Annabel, Arabella etc) www.behindthename.com/name/amabel/tree

It was in a film Mothers Always Bring Extra Love - brill. X

But wouldn't Anabel be consistently misheard as Annabel?

RickOShay · 05/04/2015 18:22

I love Christobel.

burgatroyd · 05/04/2015 18:24

I mean Amabel misheard as Annabel

Sophronia · 05/04/2015 18:54

I like Mabel a lot.

I've also heard Maybree / Maybrey / Mabry etc.

rockinrobintweet · 05/04/2015 18:59

I am highly offended that you are ruling out Maeby! Grin

Mabel is lovely though, and sounds nothing like May bull. No need to fancy it up with different spellings either, it's great as it is.

mejon · 05/04/2015 20:38

Mabel is lovely as indeed is Mabli (toilet cleaner???) which is the Welsh version (and DD2's name so I may be somewhat biased). Maybelle not so much and anyone pronouncing Mabel like that or Mabli as May-blee needs to be taken out and given a stern talking to Wink.

Invizicat · 05/04/2015 20:49

Mabel. Lovely.

reuset · 06/04/2015 01:20

Mabli is Welsh Mabel isn't it? Pfft to toilet cleaner.

Just no to Maybelle. Now that is all wrong.

Amabel is pronounced exactly like Annabel, just with an 'm' sound. Just in case you didn't know that

I don't personally like Mabel but if you do go with it you should have the courage to just stick with the traditional spelling
