Same Initial?

We have a DD whose name begins with A, is three letters and has two middle names.

DS is due in 8 weeks and after much deliberation we really like Alexander. Is it too much to have the same initial? Also worried about the differing lengths of their names...

Our other choice is James, but DH and I feel that Alexander is a better choice until we meet him (when ultimately he could be called anything that suits!).

I'd avoid it but I had a very high bar naming my children. Most people would say 'oh it's fine'.

I would be more against it if it were two of the same sex though.

Personally I don't think that matters at all. In my experience people rarely use their initials (I certainly rarely use mine anyway!) so unless someone's initials spelt out something comical or unsavoury I don't see that it matters.

Belazu84 · 30/03/2015 13:08

It doesn't matter! Length-wise he'll probably be called alex/xander/xan before long...

Fattycow · 30/03/2015 13:34

I wouldn't. I share my first initial with my brother and it can cause issues with mail. I am a lot older than my brother. It happened on more that one occasion that my dad opened a letter for me, because he thought it was for my brother. Really not something you want when you are 17, your dad reading your mail...

I think it's fine.

My sister and I have very similar names and they both begin with the same letter. Now we are both married our initials are different.

dementedpixie · 30/03/2015 14:08

3 of us in my family had the same first initial. It was never a problem. Both my children have the same first initial too

NotLoveActually · 30/03/2015 14:11

Both myself and my two dc have the same first initial. I would say don't do it, purely because I can get tongue tied and shout the wrong name to the wrong child Shock worse now we have a dog and I get dc2 and the dogs name mixed up Grin

BIL, SIL and FIL all have names that start with the same initial and they hated it! As a previous poster mentioned, it caused problems with post as they got older, as well as other confusions.

Guin1 · 30/03/2015 16:02

I think it's absolutely fine. By the time your DS is old enough to receive much personal post almost everything will be done electronically anyway, so I don't think confusion about post should be an issue at all. And I don't see why the length of the names should be an issue either!
