Opinions please!

Expecting our 1st in November!
With names, ive found it much easier to like boys names more than girls names...
So if we have a boy - Noah.
I know this is quite popular but it really means a lot to DH (mostly because of the story of Noah). I like it because it sounds so strong :)
Now girls names ive really struggled with.
I love the name Tally and Sky. If I had a girl, I would have her middle name as Edith as that was the name of my great aunt who I never met. She died in Germany in the concentration camps.
Lately, however, ive been really liking the name Edith as a first name. I think I'd shorten it to Edi.

What do people think? Is it still too old for a little girl?

I like Edie, Edith I'm not so keen on but that's just my preference, I do think if the trend for 'old lady names' keeps going strong then in a few years there will be quite a few baby Ediths!
Noah is just lovely. I know it's supposed to be mega popular but I actually don't know a single one and I have 5 dc including a pre schooler.
I love Skye too but I'd spell it with the e.

Skye is how I'd spell it too... DH says without the e... I feel that Skye is a name more than Sky, but don't know why haha

There was a character called Tally in a book I once read and it always struck me as a sweet nickname. I love Skye too. Short and crisp.

But those aside I have to say that Edith has never been my favourite name but what a beautiful tribute to your great aunt. I had a tear in my eye reading that. And Edi is super cool.

I like Edith because of its Jewish heritage but it's also not too overtly Jewish. I think it's important that my children know their heritage as its a big reason as to why my side of the family is so small. Plus my amazing grandfather went through so much as a teenager so it would be for him too... Although I don't want the name to become too heavy in that regard which is why I have added it as a middle name myself...
And Edie, not Edi? Is Edi a male spelling?

I think it's usually Edie, like Edie Sedgwick. She's the most famous Edi/e I can think of.

Noa for a girl is nice but it will lead to a lot of people thinking she's called Noah and saying 'oh I thought you'd be a man' and 'oh but isn't that a boy's name?

Hmm, this is true.
Ive always liked boys names for girls - like Joey or Jamie. DH not so keen on those but likes Noa for a girl. Also risky for when she does learn about the story of Noah and perhaps she might get bullied for it... Dunno!

Noa and Tally are both lovely.

Personally I'm not that keen on Edith /Edie (just doesn't sound very "pretty" to me) so would use that as a mn.

I like Edith, with Edie as a nickname, and think there will be a few of them around.

Also like Tally, as a nickname for Natalia or Natalie.

Love Edie. Gorgeous. And a great way to honour your great aunt, whether you go for the whole name or the nickname.

Edie Skye or Edith Skye work for me.

I love Tally as a nickname, but I'd try and find a 'proper' name too because Tally sounds like a little girl's name.

I like Skye.

I'm not keen on Edith, but Edie is sweet. Going against the grain here, but I don't like the link to your great aunt. It just seems such a sad thing to name your child after, particularly since you never met her and so have no personal connection to her, just a tragic story. Ok for a middle name maybe, but I wouldn't use it as a first name.

I like all your names esp Edith.

I know all the Noah's so I'm not keen for that reason but it's a nice name.

Edie is nice; if it helps, an alternative version of Edith is Editha/Edita (Ay-dee-tah, with the 'Ay' as in 'hay'). I think names that honour and remember past family members are lovely.

As previous poster says, Tally sounds more like a nickname. As well as Natalie/Natalia, it could also be short for Talia/Talya (a Hebrew name meaning 'Dew from God' ), Thalia (ancient Greek, one of the Muses -goddesses of the arts and learning), Talitha (Aramaic, new Testament) or even Tallulah (probably Native American/First Nations)

flora I really like Talia/Talya.
I knew a girl called Tally and we had this amazing connection when we first met. We knew we had never met each other before and yet we already knew each other. Spooky. I was only about 11 years old when we met. So that's where that name comes from... Agree it sounds a little like a nickname but not keen on Natalie or Natalia.
It's important for me to have a Jewish connection for my daughter - we are not religious but it's a strong heritage. And talia/Talya is gorgeous! :)

I think it's an absolutely beautiful idea to commemorate your great aunt in this way. It is lovely to think there will be a young Edith, related to her, around in the 21st century.

I actually previously didn't like the name that much, but would still use it if I were you, for those special reasons. Thinking about why I didn't like it, it's probably just because I associate it with haughty old ladies (Dame Edith Evans, Dame Edith Sitwell, also a bossy great aunt of mine!) , but as 'old lady chic' continues this will be less and less true in the future I suppose. If I drop that association and just listen to the sound of the name, it's beautiful. Edie is lovely too.

Not that it makes any difference to your choice, but according to my name dictionary it's not actually a name of Jewish origin, did you know? They say it's an Anglo Saxon name meaning 'rich' and 'war', the name of 2 early saints, and very popular around 1066! Wikipedia seems to agree. Unless it's one of those names with more than one origin, like say Maya.

I didn't know it wasn't a Jewish name - that is funny. Although the fact that the name isn't actually of Jewish origin isn't really an issue because the woman who she'd be named after was Jewish.
I do see that I could be quite a morbid story behind her name, but I guess it's more about the heritage - that's my family's story and I don't want it to just fade away.
I think Id always call her Edie and not Edith because it is quite an old name... I couldn't take seriously a baby called Keith...
I guess I need to have a nice long list of girls names that I like and then when she (if it's a she!) comes along, we'll see what she looks like!

I did one of those baby morph things online and apparently our baby will look like Phil Collins...
