I prefer Margot personally

Luciferbox · 23/03/2015 20:07

I was going to say what Mint said.

Only1scoop · 23/03/2015 20:07

mariel Grin

MintChocAddict · 23/03/2015 20:07

bayrans Grin

Ehhn · 23/03/2015 20:14

Mil's middle name is Muriel and her boys tease her loads with either you're terrible Muriel or by elongating the muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuriel.

MintChocAddict · 23/03/2015 20:17

Sorry Larry Derailed the thread with all the Muriel/Mariel stuff.

I don't know if it's in now but personally wouldn't use it as am not a fan of old lady chic. Each to their own and all that. She's probably got sisters called Edith, Dorothy and Maud. Wink

LarrytheCucumber · 24/03/2015 10:09

Didn't understand the Muriel/Mariel bit and checked again in paper to make sure I hadn't misread Grin.
DH has thrown the paper away, but the sibling was a boy beginning with M I think.

I'm going to be watching it later....this thread has bought back memories Grin

Roomba · 24/03/2015 10:14

You're terrible Muriel! Is my only reaction to that name... sorry!

squoosh · 24/03/2015 10:28

Funny that Mariel sounds quite pretty whereas Muriel really doesn't.

'You're terrible Muriel' would be a constant refrain.

HesterShaw · 24/03/2015 10:32

I had a Great Aunt Muriel. And a Gladys and a Flo and an Elsie and a Lily (two actually) and a Lilian.

They are all old lady names but Muriel is the oldest ladiest name.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 24/03/2015 10:42

As in Chandler Muriel Bing?

I hope not.

swazza · 24/03/2015 10:49

Have you ever watched Muriels Wedding?

You're dreadful Muuuuuuuuriel!

Its not a name I am keen on. The male equivalent to me is Malcolm.

I see a couple of senior citizens all dressed in beige with sensible lace up shoes in my head when I hear the name Muriel (obviously married to Malcolm)!

KoalaDownUnder · 24/03/2015 14:34

Muriel is with Gladys and Ethel; it's not pretty old-ladyish like Lillian or Iris, it's just plain ugly old-ladyish.

AugustaGloop · 24/03/2015 14:37

i know 2 Meriels. I think it is pretty.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 24/03/2015 14:39

This is my mum's RL given name and she hates it, has used another name since she was 18. She was named for an aunt.

Somehow it should be pretty but just isn't...

LarrytheCucumber · 24/03/2015 17:24

I knew a Muriel born in the 1950s when everyone else was called Susan, Janet, Christine, Pamela, Anne etc. She didn't like it.
Sounds from the comments that DT baby might be in a class of her own Wink

Hideous. Very sorry.

urterriblemuriel · 24/03/2015 20:44

My favourite film....as you can guess!

Never known one personally, but I cannot help but not think of her in the film.

GingerLDN · 25/03/2015 18:20

Yip I hear it as in the film. In my head it's always in an Australian accent too Grin
