Has Twilight killed Esme?

DH and I loved Esme until MIL announced that according to social worker sister Esme is a no-no due to influence of Twilight. A relative (distant through marriage not blood) on MIL side has called her daughter Esme and apparently it does not sound good with a strong inner city accent.
My reaction was to freak out and strike it from the list, I am a massive snob (shame on me). I have calmed myself and now wonder if this is the massive social problem it has been construed as or whether it is just an unfortunate co-incidence?

I have never met relative in question and I am not likely to.

I should add that I don't know anything about Twilight.

I wouldn't have thought Twilight, but I would have thought Granny Weatherwax!

LadyGregory · 20/03/2015 20:00

I haven't read it but I thought Scary Vampire Baby was called something monumentally hick and made up like 'Renesmee'? Which I fear I always pronounce in my head as 'REEN- Smee'.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 20/03/2015 20:01

we know a few girls called esme and no issues with it sounding bad here (south east)

I wouldn't have associated it with twilight, but I hated the books cant even remember a character called esme. certainly wasn't a main character.

Tiredemma · 20/03/2015 20:03

I have an Esme. I never even knew it was a character in Twilight and no one (not one person) has ever made reference to Twilight.

Trills · 20/03/2015 20:13

No.

I wouldn't recommend bloody Renesmee.

But Esme is not even a main character.

pieceofpurplesky · 20/03/2015 20:15

Twilight is a bit passé now ... If it was Katniss ...

curlii103 · 20/03/2015 20:23

I think it's twilight but then I read ) all twilight!!!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 20/03/2015 20:52

Biggest issue with Esme is the pronunciation - Es-meee or Es-May?

Zahrah5 · 20/03/2015 20:55

I love twilight!

Esme is not a main character, but she is very good charakter.
Caring for others, compassionate, loving, sensitive, understanding...

I would have no problemwith association with charakter like that. I think she was the nicest person in the book, perhaps little fake as she was just always referenced as too loving and caring.
I have never heard name Esme before the book but its pretty name and seem to be known here in england much more that in US, maybe thats why I didnt hear it before

Stinkersmum · 21/03/2015 10:57

Popularity has killed Esme sadly.

Fattycow · 21/03/2015 11:12

I dislike Esme, because I knew a girl named that when I was younger and she was vile. But thinking of Twilight would be a bit of a stretch, as the Esme in there is a minor character.
It's the same with Paul. It is a character in the books, but I'm sure hardly anyone will make the association.

aoife24 · 21/03/2015 13:11

I think of the Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell.

EsmetheWitch · 21/03/2015 13:14

I think it's a lovely name and few people would associate it with Twilight.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 21/03/2015 13:23

I read the Twilight books and don't think Twilight. I just don't like the name particularly

MaudeLebowski · 21/03/2015 13:32

I wouldn't touch a Twilight name with a barge pole. There are so many baby Jacobs post-films.

Feel sorry for the baby Renesmees.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/03/2015 14:47

I really dislike the "can't use it because of a flash in the pan bit of pop culture" attitude.

It only seems to apply to certain names too.

Nobody seems to say it about Luna which was vanishingly rare in the UK before Harry Potter. But woe betide you if you like Hermione!

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/03/2015 14:47

I like Esme, op, and would use it.

TwoLittleTerrors · 21/03/2015 14:53

I know it's twilight. But what's wrong with that?

CaptainAnkles · 21/03/2015 14:59

It's a nice name and I wouldn't think of Twilight when I heard it, I'd forgotten there was a character in it called that actually.

dimdommilpot · 22/03/2015 20:11

I have an Esmé (Ezmay). She is 4.5. I have never watched twilight and have never had anybody ask if thats where i got the name from (i didnt).
