What do you think? Is a bit feminine?

Not at all, means "behold, a son" in Hebrew apparently as well. In the OT he is the oldest son of Jacob & Leah.

Plonkysaurus · 19/03/2015 11:46

My son's middle name is Reuben, and it suits him very much! I love his first name too, but sometimes I wish we'd been braver and given him Reuben as a first name.

LadyGregory · 19/03/2015 12:36

I quite like it, but since DH worked in an American beach resort cafe during our university drop-out days, it says 'type of huge, hot corned beef sandwich' to me.

raymama · 19/03/2015 12:53

Love love love it. It is, and has been my number one boys name for a while. Only problem is I will have a Reuben R, and not sure it works. Confused Definitely not feminine.

sweetpeame · 19/03/2015 13:26

Sounds pretty masculine to me - the more I hear it, the more I like it! It might be joining my list for DS1...

squoosh · 19/03/2015 13:36

Not feminine at all. Becoming really popular from what I can see.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 19/03/2015 13:37

I like it - though I'm also recently aware that it's also a big sandwich Smile

mrstothemr · 19/03/2015 13:58

Ds is a Reuben! I think it's a strong name, classic and solid. Lovely traditional meaning too

BlueBananas · 19/03/2015 21:09

Oh Thankyou, good to know the general opinion is good
I really like it but do kind of feel it's a bit effeminate, maybe because it sounds a bit like Ruby? I don't know
I love the idea of naming my baby free a sandwich though that's pretty cool haha

I love Reuben, this was to be DS's name, all agreed and everything with DH. Until he told me just after my waters broke, and getting into the car for the hospital, that he'd changed his mind! DS was 'baby boy' until 3 days old, when DH caved on a prior name he'd rejected at the start. I miss Reuben, but love the name we actually ended up with. DH was lucky I didnt punch him in the face though...

MaudeLebowski · 19/03/2015 21:14

I think it is awful. But then again I struggle with my Rs, so they are always best avoided in my mind!

WhingeyMinge · 19/03/2015 21:22

I love it Smile

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 19/03/2015 21:33

Love it. Tried to make it work with our surname but it was not to be Sad

BlueBananas · 20/03/2015 17:28

Ok Reuben is definitely top of my boys list...for now!
Really appreciate all the opinions Smile

I also have a Reuben. I've always loved it but worried it was getting a bit popular so had taken it off the list as wanted something more unusual. When he was born though I couldn't think of any other name that could possibly be his! I think of it as a really masculine name and maybe it was because he looked like such a little boy that was partly it. A lot of people have said they love his name but then again they wouldn't say if they hated it ;-)

Lupin32 · 20/03/2015 22:05

Oh and incidentally even the meaning seemed to fit him too as everyone had been convinced I was having a girl! Behold! A son!

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 20/03/2015 22:08

Gorgeous name. I'd have chosen it if I'd had a boy.

SanityClause · 20/03/2015 22:12

I know a Reuben. It's a lovely name. It's biblical - one of Joseph's brothers was called Reuben.

Fattycow · 21/03/2015 11:15

I love it! But I would spell it Ruben.

MaraThonbar · 21/03/2015 11:42

Lovely. Getting very popular though.

MaudeLebowski · 21/03/2015 13:29

If you like biblical names, can I recommend Abel? I only know one, in his 70s. Much less popular.

RL20 · 21/03/2015 17:47

Love the name. I'm hoping to use it for my baby boy due in a few weeks, but spelt in Spanish as Ruben. Just so it's ever so slightly different and as a nod to the Spanish a few generations back in my family

BernadetteMatthews · 21/03/2015 17:49

Not at all keen, sorry. The little ones I know get called Rubes.

ShoeJunkie · 21/03/2015 18:18

DS1 is Reuben - it took us a while to come up with his name (it was never on any short list!) but I love it.
