Are Beatrice and Hannah really common right now?

DS has a fairly unusual name, albeit not too zany. We are now expecting DC2 and these are our top ideas for a girl. I'm just worried they might be too popular, and shared by half the girls in the class. So, for those of you who know lots of little ones, are these very popular at the moment?

Thanks

I know lots of little ones through my work, but only 1 Hannah and no Beatrice's. I think Hannah is slightly regaining popularity, but certainly not as much as in previous generations and not as much as other names.

Dd is yr4 and I know of 3 Beatrice's (bea's) in her year. Only one Hannah.

There were two Beatrice's that I knew of in her previous school.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 17/03/2015 21:19

I know a couple of small girls called Hannah, but none called Beatrice.

verelab · 17/03/2015 21:22

I know quite a lot of under 7s, and, while neither name is hugely popular, Beatrice seems slightly more so. I know 4 Beatrices and 2 Hannahs.

manicinsomniac · 17/03/2015 21:39

Not at all in my area. I teach in a school and the youngest (and only) Hannah we have is 8. There has been one other in the 8 years I've been there and she'll be 17 now. I know dozens of adult Hannahs, but not children. I've only ever taught one Beatrice and she'll be 20 now - know one other, also aged 20.

I love the name Hannah. Not overly keen on Beatrice.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'm just finding the idea if potentially having a child with a 'fairly popular name' having gotten used to having a child with a fairly unique name (I.e. Most people tell me they've never met another). My mum thinks we need to choose another unusual name so our DS doesn't feel singled out, but I don't want to end up with names we're not sure about just for that reason. We didn't deliberately look for such an uncommon name for DS, it was just the name we both agreed in.

My niece Beatrice is 21. Don't know any little Beas.
Think Hannah is always popular. Know quite a few of them

Hulababy · 17/03/2015 22:15

I work in an infant school - abt 280 children.

Beatrice - none
Hannah - 1
Hana - 1

I also know an 8yo Hannah. Knew a Beatrix who'd be abt 8 or 9 now, don't know a Beatrice.

Noggie · 17/03/2015 22:31

I know quite a few Hannah's from age 4-18. Only one Beatrice ... Think it probably depends on where you live. Think best to choose a name you love rather than worry too much about how popular it is or isn't as names go in and out of fashion and nobody has any control over that!

mrstowers · 17/03/2015 23:55

I don't know any babies or children called Hannah or Beatrice.

Falconwolf101 · 18/03/2015 09:38

They are both nice, if you want to slightly alter them to make them more unusual here are some suggestions:
Hannah:
Annah
Hannie
Hana- Pronounced Haan-a
Beatrice:
Bea-obviously XD
Tris
Bearice- Sounds a little like Iris
Trea- Sounds like Tree, eh?
Anyway, you've chosen great names and if you like them the way that they are, then good for you!

reuset · 18/03/2015 10:52

Yes they are popular. Wouldn't bother me at all. They're nice sensible names

Weebirdie · 18/03/2015 11:00

I have a granddaughter named Hannah but its nothing to do with anyone on the TV.

It was chosen because its beautiful and when we looked at her we just knew she was Hannah.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2015 12:07

I have a teen Hannah she is the only 1 in her year I work with toddlers and have never known a Hannah amongst them 2 Beatrice's in 10 years name your baby what you want

CarlaVeloso · 18/03/2015 13:18

I know one baby Beatrice. I can't fathom it, I think it's rather an ugly name given the thousands you have to choose from. I don't think you need worry about it becoming very popular.

bialystockandbloom · 18/03/2015 13:51

I know of quite a few under 10s called Beatrice, but no Hannahs of that kind of age. Both lovely names imo.

Equimum · 18/03/2015 20:12

Thanks everyone. So it would seem that although the names are both around, neither are overwhelmingly popular, at the moment at least.

Carla, it's interesting how people think of different names. I've always thought Beatrice is so pretty, but at the same time strong. The same with Hannah, I suppose. I also love Georgia and Henrietta, for the same reasons, but they're not to DHs taste.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2015 20:18

Oh I liked Georgia for Hannah but dh hated it @

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 18/03/2015 20:19

With regards to your older child having an unusual name and feeling you have to give subsequent dc unusual names as well. I say go with your heart and call them by names you love.

My eldest has an unusual name and the other 2 have fairly popular names. Certainly will be in the higher ranking of the popular names. I believe ds2 and dd1 are in the top 30. Ds1 is something like 157 but wasn't even in the top 500 when he was born.

Equimum · 18/03/2015 21:11

Thanks helpme. If we have another boy, I guessing they'll have a fairly unusual name, just because we struggle to agree on anything other than the most popular names. For example, we were going to cal DS William, but we knew if three born within the month before him! With girls, though, I feel there is a much wider range if relatively common names that we both like (and classic names that aren't hugely popular, but are never really out of fashion).

I've never cared for Hannah. It sounds like someone who 'abitually drops their haitches trying to say Anna.

Anaffaquine · 18/03/2015 23:43

Know one Hannah, my goddaughter aged 13. Taught one Beatrice, 10 years ago. Come across hundreds of kids through work and rarely come across either.
I love Beatrice but as we have the surname of a boy wizard... We would have looked ridiculous going for that name! Wink
