Is this boring??

My DH and I have only thought of 1 name for our little boy - William. We have 8 weeks to go. We'd be really grateful for any other name suggestions that we might like. We have a double barrelled surname and so probably won't give him a middle name and like first names that can be shortened easily. Just a bit concerned about him being called 'Willy' in the playground... or worse!

It's not boring it's classic, and has loads of shortened versions:

Will, Willy, Bill, Billy, Liam, Will.I.Am (

Justwhy · 13/03/2015 15:20

I'm sure the willy shortening is a myth! I have taught at least 5 Williams and know 2 more. I have never heard them called Willy.

I think it's a fantastic name. Strong and Classic.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 13/03/2015 15:26

Absolutely not boring! A great, classic name.

If you're after other suggestions then
Thomas
Peter
Gregory
Rowan
Stuart
Philip /Pip
Christopher /Kit

Strong and classic is definitely the way forward for us. Had to laugh at 'Willy shortening' - no man wants that! Haha!

George.
Henry.
Frederick.
Andrew.
Joseph.

I have a teenage one and can allay your fears about Willy. He was teased and called it for about 2 weeks at school by his mates when he was 14, laughed if off, and that was that. It was doubly funny for his school mates as he one of his friends is called Richard, so they were called Willy and Dick! But as I say, the teasing lasted about a nano second, and not an issue in the slightest.

He's not so keen on the full William and is always known as Will.

widdle · 13/03/2015 15:40

Not boring at all - it's a name you both like which actually can be quite rare!

William was on our list too - also loved but didn't go with:
Edward
Thomas
Charles

Finally went with Matthew

See - I'm even more boring than you! Grin

HubertCumberdale · 13/03/2015 15:46

Oh I love Frederick! I really like names that have 3 versions for each stage of life.

Freddy as a cute kid
Frederick as a dashing young man
Fred as a kindly old man

Baddz · 13/03/2015 15:49

Thomas.
:)
It's a fab name

HairyHandedFucker · 13/03/2015 15:54

Willy
John Thomas
Dick
Percy

Take your prick.

throneofgames · 13/03/2015 16:04

Haha! So many penis jokes and not enough time...

It's boring yes but it's nice and inoffensive

SylvaniansAtEase · 13/03/2015 16:10

It's a good name. Classic is good because while you might go off it a bit - you're never going to actually REGRET it in a 'oh jeeez what was I thinking?' way - it's never going to be an albatross.

However I do prefer Thomas (Tom) to William and all the shortenings. I think it sounds friendlier and stronger. However I do like Will. Other options:

Hugh/Hugo
Barnaby
Peter
Spencer
Leo
Sebastian

BikeRunSki · 13/03/2015 16:11

I had a teacher called Richard William Fallas. Trufact.

WyrdByrd · 13/03/2015 16:16

It's my dad's name - and he's pretty fabulous so I like it!

He's always been known as Bill, most of the little boys with the name these days seem to be known as Will.

BikeRun - my dad's surname is Cock - I kid you not Grin!

GoooRooo · 13/03/2015 16:16

I love William (it's also my dad's name so I am biased - he is known as Bill or Billy, I prefer 'Will' as a shortened version)

Other names in a similar vein;
Alexander
Edward
James
George
Nicholas

DC2 will be getting it as a middle name if it's a boy. I would have it as a first name but DH has vetoed.

Mehitabel6 · 13/03/2015 16:17

I love classic names. I have never known one called Willy.

HairyHandedFucker · 13/03/2015 16:26

You asked.
I think they are unfortunate names, now associated with penises. If that doesn't bother you, go for it.
