Ranulf / Ranulph

DH won't let this name drop. I've been resistant to it as I assumed it was German in origin (and we're not German) but I've just looked it up and it is an old English name, which has made me reconsider.

It looks like Ranulf is the more usual spelling but Ranulph (Fiennes) is better know.

So what are your thoughts on this one? Too out there? I've never heard of another other than Fiennes.

Other names on the list are Sebastian, Austin, Joseph, Laurence...

Prefer Sebastian. Also prefer Ranald, which is Scottish (?) I think - know two of those. Think Ranulf is the nicer spelling, and generally like it.

I prefer Laurence from your list.

DramaAlpaca · 07/03/2015 17:46

I'm not keen, tbh, but the Ranulf spelling is better.

I much prefer Laurence, Joseph or Austin.

Well, I like it because it is an old English name.

If you look back(quite a long way) as you have done,it isn't unusual, but would be classed as that now.

All the others on your list are softer somehow,so it is different sounding. I think it is a good, strong boy's name, but can see I am in a minority already.

I love it! Prefer fiennes spelling.

So many Sebastian's....

Qwebec · 07/03/2015 19:27

I like it too esp. ending with a ph, the onter ones are ok but so so common in comparison.

We've just come to the terrible realisation that we couldn't use this partnered with DHs surname which begins Heart... Where we are it would definitely be pronounced Ranul fart...we might double barrel though so it could be usable....
Any other suggestions in this vein? DH is a teacher so so many names are off the list!!!!
