Quick question: Can a child born in early May be named Holly, or do you think it a name reserved for babies born in the winter months?

I've never really associated it with winter tbh, I know holly leaves etc but its just not an automatic thing for me.

I love the name and would use it at anytime of year.

sliceofsoup · 25/02/2015 13:14

I love it and I don't see a problem with using it any time of year.

I'm a holly and was born in the summer. In my 34 years of life no one has ever mentioned it and it's never been an issue! Go for it.

I know people called Holly born in October, August and May just off the top of my head.

I don't think it matters at all. Pretty name.

loislines · 25/02/2015 19:58

Hollies are evergreen so are around all year. I think the same applies to the name!

Pandora37 · 26/02/2015 07:17

I'm also a Holly born in the summer and no-one has ever commented on it either. Go for it.

Both DS1 and DS2 would have been Holly had they been girls.

DS1 has a summer birthday and DS2 an autumn one.

The time of year being an issue would never have occurred to me tbh. It's just a lovely name. I wouldn't see Holly as tied to the winter/Christmas season, any more than I'd consider Rose or Daisy to be summer-baby-only names.

Hmm, this is all pretty much the opposite response to the one I got when I said Holly. Everyone replied that I was out of season for the name...

It's still on my short list though. I don't personally care about the seasonal connection, but what I did find was that I was much more "into" the name during December and then my interest waned a little in the new year. So I think that the time of year can actually effect how you feel about the name. Just a note of interest!

Totally fine. If it had to be winter and xmas, no one in nz or aus would ever be called Holly!

CaptainAnkles · 27/02/2015 14:12

Lovely name, any time of the year. Smile

FatSwan · 27/02/2015 14:18

I love this name. I only ever knew one Holly and she was an October birthday.

maggiethemagpie · 27/02/2015 19:16

There's no law against calling your child holly at non-winter times of the year as far as I know.

farmerswifey · 27/02/2015 20:07

Thank you everyone. DD1 wants to name the baby either after Peppa Pig or Holly of 'Ben and Holly' fame. I think we've made the right choice.
