How would people pronounce the name ARIYA. It is a name in itself as a different spelling of Aria. It is not the same name as Arya. The reason we like this spelling is our daughter will be mixed race eng/indian and we think the name looks more like an indian name and we like the spelling in general. Would you pn it the same as Aria or would you pn it as a-rye-a?

I would guess a-REE-a.

AnnaBegins · 21/02/2015 14:29

AAH-ree-a to me, like a musical aria, but I would spell it aria due to the musical connotation. Never seen it spelt ariya.

TRexingInAsda · 21/02/2015 14:36

I'd think short a as in apple, not long as in aria. I would say A-ree-ya.

NerrSnerr · 21/02/2015 14:38

I would say A-ree-ah

seaoflove · 21/02/2015 14:41

Aryan is an Indian boys' name, right? Obviously, it has some unfortunate connotations, as does Ariya to my ears unfortunately, but not everyone will notice.

I would pronounce it as AIR-ree-ah.

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/02/2015 14:45

a-REE-a Heart?

Seshata · 21/02/2015 15:05

Not having seen this spelling before, I'd assume that adding a y indicates a different pronunciation from Aria. I'd probably pronounce it Ah-REE-yah with a short 'a' sound and emphasis on the second syllable. I would use the same pronunciation for Aria and Arya though, with both pronnounced the same as the musical term.
What's the correct pronnunciation OP?

flanjabelle · 21/02/2015 15:10

I would have thought a-rye-a

ohmychrist · 21/02/2015 15:11

Diarrhoea - be careful

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/02/2015 15:24

I'd assume Ah-rie-ya.

Have you got another thread going about this name?

badtime · 21/02/2015 16:27

Ah-REE-ya.

gemma19846 · 21/02/2015 16:53

yes it would be pn with a short a like apple not ahhh-ree-a just a-ree-a. Yes aryan is a hindu boys name and has been for a very long time well before the nazis used the word but that is pn AIR-ee-an. Since diarrhea is not pronounced as daria i wouldnt see this ever being an issue really xx

ohmychrist · 21/02/2015 20:36

No, it's the rea sound at the end of diarrhoea! Di-ariya

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/02/2015 20:39

I'm still unsure about heart thing.
Are she - or you - going to pronounce it or is she just going to have to draw it?

ZingTheGreat · 21/02/2015 20:47

is it the female version of Aryan?

no to both.
with or without the heart

seaoflove · 21/02/2015 20:48

I thought the heart was just an indication of her love for the name.

I have no idea how you render such a thing on MN (or anywhere else for that matter) but there you go Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/02/2015 20:50

seaoflove · 21/02/2015 21:12

gemma19846 · 21/02/2015 21:16
