Sibling for Alastair?

Just mulling over names for DC2 due in July. DS is Alastair, which we chose because it's solid, has good nickname options (Al or Ally), not too pretentious and not too popular.

I feel like it's quite a neutral name and for DC2 we could either go for something a bit pretentious and adventurous (ie Hugo, Cressida) or something very plain and classic (ie Peter, Elizabeth) but I'm really torn about which way to go. Any thoughts or advice? Do you know any Alastairs and what are their siblings called?

Alastairs I know have siblings Richard and Matthew, which fall into your second camp. How about Conrad?

If your heart lies in the Hugo and Cressida direction I'd go with that. The Alastair I know has a brother called James/Jamie.

Alastairs I know are either:

Scottish - hence siblings called Jamie, Flora and Ross
Upper middle-class/bookish - hence siblings with names like Hugh, Julian and Richard

I think any of the names you've suggested would go with Alastair - none of them looks obviously out of place.

Patrick? We have one, chosen for similar reasons. X

Thanks for the thoughts, we aren't Scottish and switchitoff you've managed to name half my family! Perhaps we were just conforming to type with Alastair after all HmmGrin

Patrick is nice but I know a few and they've ruined the name for me. Most of the other names are in the family already. Not thought of Conrad bluechampagne it doesn't grab me buy definitely bears mulling over, thanks!

I know an Alastair with a brother Jonathan.

I'm definitely in the Peter/Elizabeth camp. Classic, dignified and good nickname potential.

"Pretentious" names are ten a penny these days, and I'm pretty sure Hugo is more common then Peter.

I knew a lovely family years ago with 2 DSs called Alistair and Laurence. Always loved those names.

TheRealMaudOHara · 19/02/2015 12:10

Oh I love Laurence but can't use it unfortunately. Funny how you've all only suggested boys' names - maybe Alastairs don't have sisters!!

Oooh some lovely suggestions, thanks! switchitoff especially given me some new names to chew over, lots of those fit with the kind of thing I like! Don't think the next one can be a Scottish name too or we'll seem a bit odd being English in England. It's a shame because I love Douglas too!
