Apologies if this has been done a thousand times but names go in and out and opinions change as a name gets more popular.

What do you think of when you hear the name Matilda?

Are there are well....chav associations with it? Sorry for using the 'c' word but my other front runner seems to be associated with this word which has turned me off the name.

Thanks

Yes, ressy he was probably right about the Scottish referendum too Wink

And I think re your earlier remark, a lot of people choose a name which they believe to be fairly unusual only to meet two or three ( or more!) children with the same name shortly thereafter. How annoying!

For what it's worth, Matilda is highly tipped to be used by Kate & Wills if they have a girl in April. Apparently it is one of the very few names that has the royal history, lineage etc that fits in with the protocol along with Elizabeth, Victoria, Mary & Alexandra. So there. Nothing chavvy about that whatsoever.

Agree, coconutty.

Will people never learn

I did wonder why a thread about the name Matilda was so long.

Anyhoo, I like it. It's like Tabitha. But spelt competely differently.

kavv0809 · 16/02/2015 23:32

To reiterate my earlier point. I don't believe anyone including the OP was suggesting a) that Matilda was a chav name or b) that the use of the word chav was ideal.

I thought she was merely attempting to explain that a previous well loved name had been described as such, and she was trying to outline what it had been described as to avoid confusion.

Unfortunately confusion ( and offence) has abounded.

IMHO Matilda is a perfectly nice name. And while I don't love the term chav or chavvy, I understand that some people use it as a shorthand when describing a particular socio economic group or culture. I don't read it as offensive but I can see that others must do.

looki · 16/02/2015 23:38

Oh dear. I am so mortified that I caused all this controversy over my post.

*I thought the OP had discounted her first choice name (which she hasn't specified) because the baby name threads had thrown up comments that it was 'chavvy' and 'likely to be heard shouted across Iceland'.

I read it that she is now casting about for opinions on her second choice, Matilda. I thought she only mentions the chav and Iceland bits in context of the research done on the first name and the comments she found.*

This is exactly what I meant. I think Matilda is a beautiful name. However, while I'd like to thank you all for your opinions, I really hope this thread just stops now. Please.

Looki you really have nothing to be mortified about. Your OP was perfectly fine, it's just other less desirable comments spoilt the thread.

Note to self - don't post name opinion posts on MN, wouldn't fancy being called a knob unjustifiably! Hmm

bubalou · 17/02/2015 07:07

Exactly what tranquility said.

No reason to be mortified at all.

Those of us that can read understood what you meant and as for calling you rude names that was unacceptable by that particular person so please don't take any of it to heart.

to try and give another 2 pence from opposing view, rather than chavy I think tis overly sloany! There was an annoying, smug, upper/middle class father on the train his entire conversation with his chum was to show off about his grand life for all to hear, then he refers to his daughter and says " well Matilda did did this.." and I throught euuughhhh horrid, and so typical, trying to be all bohemian and different in his vain attempt to escape being such a dull, average, middle class man (in that Katie Hopkins way) .So no, based on him do not like the name, just a bit try hard...sorry.

reuset · 17/02/2015 10:20

There are plenty of other words could be substituted for chav, kavv. I'm sorry but I do judge the use of the term

I'm sure the OP didn't mean any harm it was just a badly worded way of expressing her doubts.
