We're almost settled on this as a name for our DS, but can't decide on the spelling. I always thought it was spelt with 'on' and my DH thought it was 'an'. Does anyone have any idea which is the most common? I don't want him to spend his life having to spell it out but I guess that's bound to happen if there are two variations?

Jonathan
I have never ever seen it spelt with on and I see lots of names in my job.

Teeb · 14/02/2015 13:49

An, I've never come across it as on before.

IHeartKingThistle · 14/02/2015 13:49

It's an.

Mind you, I have taught 2 actual people who had it as 'Johnathan'. Odd.

No idea if -on is a recognised spelling in other countries, but it is not the normal spelling here.

I know someone who spelled it -on and I just thought, way to give your child a lifetime of correcting the spelling of his name (or just ot bothering!)

A quick google discovered a few people (writers, artists etc) with the ON spelling.
The AN is far more common though, and I should think most people will spell his name that way and need to be corrected.
Although an awful lot of names do have alternative spellings and their owners get used to spelling them out so I don't think it's a huge deal if you prefer the more uncommon version.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 14/02/2015 18:55

Jonathan.
Its a fantastic name! Ours will be 5 in April and is know mostly as Jonny. It is definitely the most common and assumed spelling, although ON is an acceptable spelling..... it all depends on how much people getting it wrong will do your head in!

Cornberry · 14/02/2015 18:58

Jonathan much nicer

DramaAlpaca · 14/02/2015 18:59

Jonathan is the usual spelling, and it's a lovely name.

Jonathon is an acceptable alternative.

Johnathan is just wrong.
