Amelia/Mila or Martha??

Becmac135 · 11/02/2015 19:11

Hi everyone,
My husband and I have just found out that baby number 2 (EDD June 26th) is going to be a little girl and have made a shortlist of names that we like.
Just thought I'd see what others think as we aren't sharing our choices with family/friends and my hubby and I have different favourites (although we do both like both names).
So my favourite is Amelia (which we would eventually shorten to Mila) and hubs favourite is Martha.
I'd like Middle name Jayne (family tradition) but also like May, or Grace as a middle name. Our surname is McDonald and our little boy is called Rex William.
Any opinions (or other suggestions) greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance x

I say mila as Meela not myla.

My preference would be martha or mila, then Amelia much less as too popular. It is fine though.

I think most people won't know how to pronounce Mila. I wouldn't!

Amelia and Martha are both OK, but Amelia is VERY popular for the last couple of years, so if you are worried about having a name that dates (like being called Jennifer in 1975), then I would not choose Amelia.

TheNewStatesman · 12/02/2015 03:02

BTW--sorry you had a rough introduction to the forum. Some of the comments upthread were a bit harsh, I agree. On the other hand, at last the Baby Names forum is somewhere where you can be sure to get really frank opinions.

nooka · 12/02/2015 03:16

We have a Mila in the family, pronounced like Miller (or the end of Camila).

Personally I'm not totally sure about choosing an 'M' name with McDonald. I'd also go with Jayne as the middle name, Grace and May seem to be very popular middle names at the moment.

ScaryChicken · 12/02/2015 03:27

Martha is lovely.

Mila is also very cute but going by this thread there might be pronunciation issues which you would have to learn to live with (not necessarily the end of the world). FYI Mila kunis was born "Milena". Camila could also be shortened to Mila (I really like this)

I'm not a fan of Amelia... Overused and makes me think of a spoilt brat.

Please do ignore the ridiculous comments by Carla and Tisiphone..

Becmac135 · 12/02/2015 05:36

This has been so so useful and really made me rethink whether I like/need Amelia.
LOVE how frank people have been (about name choices, not writing styles etc), it's exactly why I did this!
We're between Mila and Martha now. Husband says mispronunciation won't matter- I'm not sure. We have a while yet.May just wait until she's here and see what suits her!
FYI my friends baby was predicted girl but came out boy, so we have a boy one lined up too just incase!! Wink

I like Amelia and mila (Meela).

I'm on a one woman mission to stop ppl using the name Martha. It's awful. Esp with your surname.

I like Jane as a first name- cruise ship singer ruining that though!!

Lunastarfish · 12/02/2015 08:47

Mila is originally a nickname for the Russian Milena/Ludmila/Camila/Milica it's pronounced Mee-La. Myla is pronounced Myla.

Go with whatever name you like. Amelia is obviously very popular and it will be difficult to control nn. I love Antonia, nn Nia/Annie but it will probably get shortened to Toni which I hate so won't go for it.

Jayne is a nice middle name and not very common now. There will be hundreds, if not thousands Amelia Mays Amelia Graces around

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/02/2015 09:23

Amelia will always be Naughty Amelia Jane to me.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/02/2015 09:23

oh, god, just scrolled back up and seen that Jayne is one of your middle name choices, sorry, but really, don't do that!

PaperdollCartoon · 12/02/2015 14:25

My sister is Amelia but has always been called Millie, didn't even know her name was Amelia until she went to school! Never uses it. She's Millie always. You can choose whatever nickname you like. But Mila is definitely pronounced mee-la, I know a Mila, it's a Polish/Russian name that's traditionally short for Ludmila (Lood-mee-la). Both famous Mila's pronounce it this way so it's what people would expect.

badtime · 12/02/2015 21:57

Milla Jovovich is actually called Milica (pronounced Mee-lit-sa), but I think that would be a tricky one to explain in the UK.

I used to know a Spanish woman called 'Milagro', which means 'miracle' (pronounced Me-LA-gro).

badtime · 12/02/2015 21:57

Sorry, posted too soon:

I knew a Spanish woman called Milagro who was also known as Mila.

GingerLDN · 12/02/2015 23:13

Love Mila pronounced Meela also like Myla. Mila Jayne is cute but the Jane McDonald loose women/singer thing would put me off slightly. Mila May McDonald too many Ms I think. I like Mila Grace. Oh I use hubby too, Tisiphone and what?!Grin

Tea1Sugar · 13/02/2015 08:15

What about Emilia with nickname Mila/ Milia?

PrintScreen · 13/02/2015 08:30

Mila (pronounced Mee-la) is the traditional Eastern European diminutive of Ludmila. It's a very popular name in Eastern Europe. I like it but as a standalone name not as a slightly forced abbreviation of Amelia.

Martha is lovely.

ChickenMe · 14/02/2015 19:29

I think Mila can stand alone. Mila Jane. I just can't take any more Amelias! I feel like naming my DC Camelia. But then it looks like a camel. think Emilia is lovely but people will just think Amelia!

professornangnang · 14/02/2015 19:30

Martha is far, far nicer.

Pico2 · 14/02/2015 19:36

I like Martha more than Mila. I know lots of Emilia/Amelias, so would avoid them.

I'm not keen on your middle name choices, they are all a bit "fillerish".

Becmac135 · 15/02/2015 07:02

Thanks everyone. Pretty certain Amelia is off the table now. Although I still think it's a really pretty name, it's just way too common.
Think Jayne will probably be the middle name we'll go for, as it's been the female middle name in our family for 5 generations now so I'd love to keep up the tradition.

So it will be Mila Jayne or Martha Jayne... I'm leaning towards Mila I think.

Mila Jayne or Martha Jayne... Any opinions on which goes best with my son's name Rex William?

Mila jayne

goshhhhhh · 15/02/2015 07:30

Dislike Martha, though probably from the bible story- Mary & Martha.

PrintScreen · 15/02/2015 07:49

Martha goes best with Rex as they are both old names with a history is usage in this country. Mila has no history of usage in this country.
