Alexa?

I'm due next month with a baby girl and we have really struggled to agree on a name. What are your thoughts please? We didn't want anything too trendy that will date easily, not too popular and feminine without being too frilly. Do you think Alexa fits the bill?

Alexa is very lovely.

CurlyWurlyCake · 10/02/2015 22:33

Alexia - I have a friend named this and we call her Lexi or Lexi.

Bowlersarm · 10/02/2015 22:35

I like it. I know an adult Alexa and I think it's great. Unusual but not complicated.

Blahia · 11/02/2015 04:50

Alexa is lovely. I know a 2-year-old Alexa, and it's very cute on her -one potential problem though: to her parents great annoyance, people often call her Alexis by mistake. :-/

HearTheThunderRoar · 11/02/2015 06:15

Gorgeous name!

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/02/2015 08:48

It is nice but think it already sounds dated.

reuset · 11/02/2015 13:44

I agree that it already sounds dated

isthisjustfantasy · 11/02/2015 13:49

By 'date easily' what I meant was I don't want a name that can clearly be defined as an 80s 90s 2000s name ie Sharon Kylie Jayden etc. I understand it won't be to everyone's taste but that doesn't bother me.

MuddyWellyNelly · 11/02/2015 15:17

It is high on my list. I don't know why people say it sounds dated, I've only ever met one and she is in her thirties. I don't think it's common enough to date? The only famous one I can think of is Alexa Chung so it's not exactly everywhere.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/02/2015 15:23

It just sounds very much in the same vein as Alexis, which is very tied to Dynasty and the 80's in popular culture.

I'm one of those annoying people who doesn't like diminutives as first names anyway, I don't think any of them age or date well.

Sophronia · 11/02/2015 16:00

I prefer Alexandra.

WaitingForMe · 11/02/2015 16:09

It's my middle name and I love it. But there is no getting away from the fact my mum wanted it to be Alexis and my dad refused to have me named after a character from Dynasty.

It's an utterly 80s name. Whether that's a positive or a negative is up to you.

rinabean · 11/02/2015 16:12

An Alexandra could be Alexa, and that will never date or be confused for anything else

Maybe I'm just biased because I think Alex is a great name but it's already my sister's so no good for my kids :)

acharmofgoldfinches · 11/02/2015 16:42

Alexa is a lovely name, and if we didn't have an Alex in the family it would have been very high on the shortlist for our new baby, who is also due next month.

For me the name goes back forty or so years to the head girl at primary school, and I think it's unusual enough not to be associated with any particular decade.

Lunastarfish · 11/02/2015 18:28

It's a nice name but Chung has ruined it for me

rockinrobintweet · 11/02/2015 22:01

I think it's perfect for your criteria x

ch1134 · 11/02/2015 22:02

Nice name

sleepybee · 12/02/2015 09:44

Love alexa & alexis

Jackieharris · 12/02/2015 12:14

Alexa is quite trendy though.

It's in the top 100 atm and wasn't in the previous decades.

I'd think of alexa Chung but she's not that well known.

There are a lot of similar Alexandra derivatives atm so she might have to share a nn esp if she becomes a lexi.

Rshard · 12/02/2015 20:04

I have an Alexandra, who is known as Alex but lots of her friends shorten it to Al! She has a friend called Alexia who is known as Lexi. They love having similar names and I really like all versions. We once met a Russian Alexandra who was known as Sasha, which is also lovely

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 12/02/2015 20:41

I really like it. Would also be on my list if we didn't have a very close Alexandra in the family.

caughtinthemoment · 17/02/2015 23:18

jackieharris Alexa is actually about 160 in the rankings and popularity has remained steady for the last five or six years so I wouldn't say it's one if those trendy names that will date badly.

I like it personally. Simple and classy.

CarlaVeloso · 18/02/2015 12:29

Alexa would get Lexi - Sexy Lexi. Not nice.

LollyLondon · 18/02/2015 13:09

Not so keen, much prefer Alexandra

dimdommilpot · 18/02/2015 14:13

My neighbours have just had an Alexa, they will call her Lexi. Its also DD1s middle name. I like it.
