Do people really hate this name? I love it but it seems many others think it's awful! I don't want a name that everyone hates but equally I want a name we love! Thank you in advance

I love it.

I think people often see it as exceptionally posh which puts them off.

Cric · 31/01/2015 17:53

I love it.

squoosh · 31/01/2015 18:01

It's a true Marmite name. People generally have a strong opinion on it one way or the other. Seems to be rising steadily in popularity so obviously has its fans.

squoosh · 31/01/2015 18:02

I do hate it though.

Bowlersarm · 31/01/2015 18:03

I hope it is getting more popular, I would love to see more around than the handful of Ruperts there are at the moment.

I always think a couple who name their child Rupert are desperate to be seen as posh.

VinoTime · 31/01/2015 18:04

I love Rupert! It's my favourite boys name after Henry.

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 31/01/2015 18:24

I didn't really feel either way about it until I went to a midwife appointment and all I could hear was 'Rupert come here' 'rupert don't touch that' for 20 minutes straight. She seemed really wet and the kid seemed really wimpy! I know that sounds awful but just put me off!

SleeplessSeattle · 31/01/2015 18:36

My 4mo is called Rupert and we're definitely not posh!

SleeplessSeattle · 31/01/2015 18:37

Or trying to be! I love it, and he's Ru for short

TheGirlWhoPlayedWithFire · 31/01/2015 18:44

I love Rupert and in the similar vein Hugo.

My mates would rip the piss out of me if I used either of them, but I think they are lovely names.

I think it's one of those names that suits better when you're older, A'la Rupert graves or Rupert Everett.

HollyBen · 31/01/2015 18:58

I don't hate it. Don't particularly like it though

Zsazsabinks · 31/01/2015 20:35

Love it. On my list if I could just stop having girls!

Roo when they're little Rupert when they're big.

Eastpoint · 31/01/2015 20:37

I just hear 'Rupert, Rupert the bear, Everyone knows his name'.

Gibbsbasement · 31/01/2015 20:43

Rupert will have friends called Algernon and Tiger-Lily.

I do like it though, it's a 'happy' name.

Mouthfulofquiz · 31/01/2015 20:43

I love it.

chillytonight · 31/01/2015 22:17

Love!

Happilymarried155 · 02/02/2015 07:53

Thanks everyone! I think we will keep it on the list! We both love it :)

I don't like it at all.

Blahia · 02/02/2015 09:08

Rupert is great!

And I wouldn't count mumsnetters' opinion as the general public's opinion if it's because you've heard people hating it on here, as there seems to be quite a lot of people expressing extreme dislike for names just to be rude (because apparently that's fun? And apparently we should all name out children the same?!) -very immature and silly if you ask me.

So go for it! It's a nice name.

Blahia · 02/02/2015 09:10

Ps. Just to clarify: I'm not talking about this thread in particular ;)

squoosh · 02/02/2015 10:28

I'd be pretty confident in saying that Rupert is a name that will provoke a lot of reaction, both positive and negative.

And I really don't think people who express a negative opinion are doing so for 'fun'. I'd imagine they're doing so because the OP asked for honest opinions.
