The name pronounced my-ah? I'm torn between Maya (as in Angelou) and Maia (Greek goddess).

Maia because Mai is 'my' sound

Maya some will prounounce 'may-ah'

LizzieMint · 30/01/2015 17:34

There's one at my ds's school spelt Maja. I would have spelt it Maya.

ginmakesitallok · 30/01/2015 17:35

Maia. Maja is the polish spelling.

OutragedFromLeeds · 30/01/2015 18:02

Mya or Maya.

A lot of people spell 'may' mai as in Gracie-Mai/Lucie-Mai etc. so Maia maybe end up as 'may-uh'. Maya could end up that way as well obviously, but I think more people know that 'Maya' is 'My-uh'. Plus Maya looks better.

VodIsGod · 30/01/2015 18:06

Mair - as in Welsh for Mary

Bue · 30/01/2015 18:08

Either one is totally acceptably. I prefer Maya.

Clueing4looks · 30/01/2015 18:13

I know of two, spelt mya and Miya

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/01/2015 18:22

May-a

Marmot75 · 30/01/2015 18:29

I think Maya. I also think Maya Angelou is a good inspiration for a name.

ralinax294 · 30/01/2015 19:00

I would read Maya as May-ah and Maia as My-ah.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 30/01/2015 19:01

Maya - May-ah
Maia - my-ah

ByTheWishingWell · 30/01/2015 19:04

The only one I know spells if Maya.

Another vote for Maia - I would assume Maya was pronounced May-a

VikingLady · 30/01/2015 19:22

I always assumed Maya was after the Mayan people in S America, so pronounced that way. I do know someone with a DD called Maya and it is pronounced My-a

Opopanax · 30/01/2015 19:27

I think Maia looks prettier.

blueemerald · 30/01/2015 19:33

My friend is Maiya, which some might consider overkill (my-ya) but I think is really pretty.

It does depend if you want the may-a or my-a or my-ya pronunciation...

wesH · 30/01/2015 21:11

Maya. Looks much prettier too

Sophronia · 30/01/2015 21:39

Maia is prettier, I think.

carbolicsoaprocked · 30/01/2015 22:49

Thank you, I think we'll go for Maya. It was the one we were leaning towards anyway and I love the Angelou connection, I was just worried about pronunciation/spelling confusion. But as Outraged pointed out, both could end up as May-ah, so may as well go for the one we like best! Both my maiden name and DH's first name are almost always spelt incorrectly and it doesn't bother us, so hopefully DD will be as relaxed about it!

That's funny because I know someone with the same spelling and she pronounces it may-a. Confusing!

I think Maya is a great choice, I think Maia looks more princessy whereas Maya looks more grown-up and classic, in my mind anyway. For what it's worth, I would pronounce both as my-a unless told otherwise.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 31/01/2015 14:42

Maya or Mya but I've only seen it spelt Mya once.

ourglass · 31/01/2015 15:29

Mya
