Dd1 is due tomorrow, the only names we both like are sophia and kaitlyn but sophia seems very popular at the moment so leaning towards kaitlyn.

Honest opinions please

Also middle name ideas welcome, needs to be more than 1 syllable to flow with our surname

I agree that Caitlin does look nicer than Kaitlyn though.

Bobby1234 · 28/01/2015 13:28

Prefer Sophia or the C spelling of Kaitlyn. Iv never met a Sophia but know 2 Kaitlyns.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 28/01/2015 13:30

Caitlin.

anothernumberone · 28/01/2015 13:31

I have seen the Katelyn version which I would prefer but I know a Caitlin (Kathleen) so that colours my opinion.

NadiaWadia · 28/01/2015 15:59

pharoah Dylan Thomas was Welsh of course, but his wife Caitlin was born in London, of Irish descent.

mathanxiety · 28/01/2015 16:01

There is no point to spelling it with a C in the interest of authenticity -- to spell it properly it needs two fadas and should be Cáitlín.

It should be pronounced Cautchleen.

Kathleen is an anglicised version that is pronounced phonetically: Kath - leen

There is no K in Irish, but if you are going to pronounce it Kate-Lynn, then you might as well use the K.

mathanxiety · 28/01/2015 16:03

And of course there is no Y in Irish either.

daholster · 28/01/2015 22:18

We have a Kaitlin Meadow... I love it (of course!)

wesH · 28/01/2015 22:44

I dont see a problem with the K spelling - its no better or worse than the C one in my opinion. In any case its a nice name, and like you said, it's not super popular like Sophia.

Middle names that sound nice with Kaitlyn:

Kaitlyn Nicole
Kaitlyn Hannah
Kaitlyn Mary
Kaitlyn Laura
Kaitlyn Sophie
Kaitlyn Olivia

atticusclaw · 28/01/2015 22:46

Like the name don't like the spelling.

Of course the Irish pronunciation is different but in England it is spelt Caitlin and pronounced katelyn.

threepiecesuite · 28/01/2015 22:52

Yes, Caitlin is nice.

I have taught recently:
Kaitlyn
Katelyn
Katelynne
Kaitlin

I don't like any of them as much as with a C.

HesMyLobster · 28/01/2015 22:53

My DD15 is Kaitlyn. I'd never met anybody with the name when we chose it, so didn't realise there was a 'correct' spelling until after she was born and we'd named her and it felt too late to change it. I found it in a book I was reading. It was an American book, so guess it's the "American" spelling? She is Kaitlyn Rebecca. I still love her name and it suits her perfectly :)

DeeCayed · 28/01/2015 22:58

My dn is Kaitlyn. Personally I would spell it Caitlin ( ds1 was going to be Caitlin had he been a girl)

mathanxiety · 29/01/2015 04:28

I know as many Kaitlyns as Caitlins, and some Kaitlins and Caitlyns too. And one Kate-Lynne. There really is no 'correct' spelling.

All of the variations are equally removed from what it should be (i.e Cáitlín, pronounced Cautchleen) so I don't think it matters at all how it's spelled.

BreeVDKamp · 31/01/2015 12:16

I like Kaitlyn with a K :) Kaitlyn Abigail? May? Fleur?
