English yet "Jewish" names

My DH is Jewish, I am not (which is tricky at times because his religion is important to him).

It is very important for him that our children have Jewish names to help them connect with their heritage.

I understand that but we struggle to find something we can agree on because I like traditional English names.

DS1 is Samuel. He wanted Isiah, Isaac or Noah. I wanted William, Max, Frederick.

We are now debating what to call DS2. Any suggestions?

(And any one else end up compromising so both partners have a name they can live with, but one that neither loves? Seems sad)

Thank you!

Loads of fab old testament names that aren't overtly "Jewish" just good solid names. You seem to favour germanic ones though...

Is Samuel known as Sam? Or always Samuel?

You couldn't really have Daniel as DS2 I don't think. But What about Elijah Zachariah, Micah, Jonah even Ezekiel ?

Or the very " ordinary" ( in a nice way) middle of the road Benjamin Jonathan (I know a lovely Jonty) Adam Joshua Jacob Joseph David Noah ( lots of Noahs in DH prep school and it's very multi ethnic). They are very " english".

Noah is lovely.

There's the obvious: Joseph!

Max is a Jewish name to me (not a Hebrew name but a Jewish name)

Isaiah is a fantastic name.

I also LOVE Gabriel.

What about Nathaniel? Benjamin? Asher?

Our DS's Hebrew name is Ariel.

BreakingDad77 · 27/01/2015 13:06

Was going to say Jacob or Seth, latter can make you think of Seth the game keeper from Emmerdale.

just a little hint, most hebrew or jewish names have an english counterpart. like Harold or Charlie=chaim

do you like biblical names like Jonah, Simon, Noah (love that name) endless.

or do you like Modern hebrew names like Ariel, Yoam, Yiftach, Eldad (those names do sound more israeli though)

Are there family names that would fit the bill? This is an approach favoured by some Jewish traditions.

morethanpotatoprints · 28/01/2015 16:20

I know at least 5 girls who are Jewish who are called Annie.
I'm sure its not a Jewish name, but must be considered acceptable?

Devora · 28/01/2015 16:54

There's so many! My favourites are Joseph, Joel, Jacob, Seth, Noah, Asa, Asher, Sol, Ben.

Joe is just the all-round perfect boy's name and it was top of my list for a boy.
