Ideas for name for sister for Lucy - and is Anna / Arna going to get really popular after Frozen??!!

DD2 is due soon, and DH and I had been agreed on Anna for her, but in some of the 'most popular baby names' lists here in Ireland it was number one for popularity last year - I am a 1980's Sarah and don't want my DD to have similar issues with being one of several girls in her class with the exact same name! (DD1's name Lucy is extremely popular here at the moment also)

So - I'm interested to know, do people think there is going to be an explosion of Annas this year after Frozen? (or am I overthinking it ?)

And - what are some two-syllable names, similar in style to Lucy, classic, and ideally not extremely popular at the moment? My shortlist so far is:

Clara
Maisie
Libby - short for Elizabeth
Emma
Alice or Alicia
Laura
Lisa ?too similar to Lucy?

I love Anna it's such a shame about Frozen using it.

Emma is lovely, and in the same style as Lucy.

What about Hanna?

Emma is also very popular here and has been for years. I like Laura, or I know a Lucy who has a sister Lauren, and Alice is just gorgeous. Lisa to similar to Lucy I think.

I also have Clara on my list for DD2 due in 10 days but worry about pronunciation. I say it to rhyme with car so Clar-ah (the first clara I knew pronounced it like this) but most irish people say it like Lara so Clah-rah if that makes sense. Think it would drive me mad if everyone was saying it "wrong"!

I've an almost 4 year old Anna, I live in NI and it's always been popular here, so Frozen hasn't really bothered me, neither does the popularity of a name. I've 3 daughters, the other two have names that are always mentioned on MN as being too popular including the ubiquitous O name, I know loads more Annas, but then again I also know 8 Aoifes under the age of 5.

I know quite a few Lucys and their sisters are called:

Lucy and Sophie (x2)
Lucy and Katie
Lucy and Rachel
Lucy and Zoe

I think Lisa is too close to Lucy.

Emma is even more popular than Anna here in Ireland! (although I love the name). I like Alice and like having the 's' sounds in the two names - we have a boring surname! Looking at some of the websites, the popularity of Anna may be on the wane here; the three-syllable names that have been popular in the UK for a while seem to be rising up the ranks here? (trying to convince myself! )

For some reason Hannah doesn't appeal to me, not sure why.

It is yes. Like I said my youngest is Anna, and I love all my kids names, but Anna I'd probably my most favourite . It's certainly the name I get the most compliments from strangers about. Alice is lovely too, although strangely I was at a kids sports match this week and there were lots of Alice's (about 9-10 years). Go with the one you love the most - honestly.

My friend has a Lucy, the names she considered for her little sister were Maggie, Sophia (I also have one of these but spelt differently), Catherine, Juliet ( which I love) and Sophie ( which she went for).

That is so funny we know a Maggie, multiple Sophies / Sophias, and Catherine and Juliet are close relatives! Interesting to hear about older Alices, I've never met one in real life but don't know many kids that age.

I can't see any reason why there'd been an explosion of Annas due to Frozen. It's a child's film and it's children who are obsessed with it so unless it's the children naming the babies adults won't think to use the name any more than they did before.

I really like Anna. I also like Clara and Maisie from your shortlist.

I think it will get more popular. Irish people prefer simple names or Irish names so three syllables names is wishful thinking.

I think while obviously children aren't naming children, films highlight certain names. Think of that vampire series and the name Belle. I can't even think of the film titles but can remember the character names (says it all really). Also the Hunger Games seems to be influencing names , so while people don't set out to copy a name, whether consciously or subconsciously the names are in the forefront of people's minds.

Lucy and Anna are my favourite names. Just lovely.

the only ones I think you should avoid are lisa and Maisie. Lisa is too similar to Lucy, and Maisie is far too cutesy. It might be sweet on a newborn baby but imagine her at 45 years old. "Thank you for volunteering to do my child's complicated brain surgery doctor smith", "please, call me MAISIE"

That's DH's argument against Maisie too, but we know a v successful surgeon called Dilly Little (I don't think she's on MN!) so I don't buy it!!

I don't think there will be more Annas because of Frozen. For every parent who has the name Anna in their head because of the film, another parent will avoid it because of the film. Also Anna is not like say 'freya' or 'elsa' which I would describe as two names that seemed to come out of nowhere quite quickly Freya 20 years and and Elsa ten years ago.

Anna doesn't have that newness that would appeal to people who allow themselves to be inspired by a film.

I do take the point about hunger games type of names though. I feel like that film has paved the way for using nature type nouns as names. Colours too. Days of the week. Probably not in Ireland though. It's still Daniel and Emma in Ireland. The English names used are very conservative. Only the Irish names make me think "did you go to the trinity college library and blow the dust off ancient scrolls looking for the most obscure but REAL (excuse you) name you could find?" I just say 'oh lovely!'

I have a Lucy Victoria, my other daughter who is two years older is Rebecca Caitlin.

If I'd had another her name would be Alice Jane.

It's not Arna, it's Ahna.

When people from the South say Bath they don't say Bar-th, they say Bah-th.

Well the only place I have seen the name from Frozen written down was here on MN and it was spelt Arna. I'm from Ireland however so would imagine our pronunciations of Bath differ also

What about Amy/Aimee? Or Holly/Hollie?

Both in the same style as Lucy. Or Charlotte.
