What does anyone think of this name?

I don't seem to see it suggested very often on here, is that because it is not "mumsnet approved" (I hope that would not influence my decision)? Or is there something awful about it that I'm not seeing?

I think I like it, but something is holding me back and I'm not sure what. I like Joel too. Do these names sound too American? I usually dislike very American sounding names (no offence meant to anyone).

Like like like

I love it- it's DS name. I am yet to meet another Jonah (which I like as I have a very popular name and was one of 5 girls in my year with the same name). Be warned though people often mix it up with Noah (I think cause they remember it's a biblical name and it sounds similar). And he has been called Jonas on one or two occasions too.

Rhubarbgarden · 13/01/2015 18:07

I don't like it; too overtly religious for me.

Notso · 13/01/2015 18:23

I really love it. It was on the list for DS3 but doesn't quite fit with our surname and is the nickname of an ex boyfriend which put DH off a bit.

SocksRock · 13/01/2015 18:23

My nephew is Jonah, it's a lovely name. He has a lot of cuddly whales for toys though...

tantruminator · 13/01/2015 18:48

I love it but as I have a similar biblical name I wouldn't use it for another DS but if you have no other incredibly biblical names for DC Jonah fits beautifully IMHO

shakemysilliesout · 13/01/2015 18:49

I've heard it loads in north London

cowbiscuits · 13/01/2015 21:07

I think it's the biblical thing that's putting me off.

Jonas is so similar then? And doesn't have the biblical thing afaik

SaBearOz · 13/01/2015 22:46

Jonas reminds me of the Jonas Brothers (tragic American Christian boy band) which in my mind is worse than a classic biblical name.
My DS has no whale items bar one shirt that I bought him. It is a common Jewish name which is why it's popular in some areas than others.
It did mean DH ruled out other biblical names for our subsequent children to avoid being too samey despite them actually being my preference for boys

DramaAlpaca · 13/01/2015 23:15

I like it

evertonmint · 13/01/2015 23:17

I know two and it's great. I would have used it but it doesn't work with our surname.

ZingTheGreat · 13/01/2015 23:17

love it and would have chosen it but we already had a Joshua and a Noah so Jonah would have been too confusing.

I hope you go for it.

ZingTheGreat · 13/01/2015 23:19

tantrum

all of ours have Biblical names - I think they go really well together!
(the names I mean. the kids - not always!Grin )

tantruminator · 13/01/2015 23:45

I don't think biblical names always don't work, just that if your not Jewish if you have a Noah, Abraham and a Jonah your asking for it to be quizzed each time you introduce them

Things like Daniel, David and Matthew... Not so much

Fcukfifa · 13/01/2015 23:49

I like it, my ds's name is very similar. (One letter different) I'm not as keen on Joel, but that's because the two that I have met have been doosh lords

ZingTheGreat · 14/01/2015 00:02

Noah is not a Jewish name IIRC

ZingTheGreat · 14/01/2015 00:02

And I haven't been quizzed so far. he is 8.

Confused
tantruminator · 14/01/2015 00:07

Zing I'm not getting personal... Relax.

I was offering an opinion. Such is allowed on MN

ZingTheGreat · 14/01/2015 00:11

I'm so relaxed I'm half asleep!Grin

liquidstateisonthemulled · 14/01/2015 00:21

Love it. Especially as its the name of my cousins little one... Grin

Artandco · 14/01/2015 07:22

It's very popular around here

Have you considered 'Joha'

WowOoo · 14/01/2015 07:25

It's a lovely name.

shakemysilliesout · 14/01/2015 13:40
