Thora or Hester?

We have narrowed our names for our pink bump down to these two. We already have a daughter called Tilly (just Tilly, not a nickname). Please help us decide which to choose!

Neither. Sorry love.

youlookbeautifultonight · 03/01/2015 21:56

I don't like either of them, sorry!

bassingtonffrench · 03/01/2015 21:56

Hester

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2015 21:58

Hester - it goes best with Tilly & it's a much nicer name IMO.

netty7070 · 03/01/2015 21:58

Thora makes me think of Thora Hird. Hester is the better of the two.

burgatroyd · 03/01/2015 22:01

Hester! Both nice

avocadotoast · 03/01/2015 22:02

I like Thora Smile

DeadCert · 03/01/2015 22:02

Ummmmmmmm

Allalonenow · 03/01/2015 22:04

Hester Smile

zipzap · 03/01/2015 22:05

Love Hester. Has long been on my list should I have ever had a dd.

Also would avoid Thora from the practicalities point of view having two dds with the same initial!

nobutreally · 03/01/2015 22:09

Love Hester, not so much Thora.
I'm struggling to imagine (good) shortenings/nicknames - on the basis they always happen, even if not til school. Thora is going to get Thor, or I suppose Ora. Hester - Hest? Don't like either of those much.

totiredtosleep · 03/01/2015 22:12

Hester - it's on my list but my dh has vetoed it.

deraila · 03/01/2015 22:19

Thora is beautiful and I dont think Thora Hird particularly. Its my favourite of the two.

Hester is a bit like esther and I wouldn't use it my child but if i was introduced to a baby Hester I would think it was a lovely and bold that the child had a less popular name.

Sundayplease · 03/01/2015 22:22

Both awful. Not heard of Hester as a real name.

SillyBugger · 03/01/2015 22:24

No. Sorry.

squoosh · 03/01/2015 22:25

Essie would be a nice nickname for Hester.

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 03/01/2015 22:44

Hester is fab (bloody DH vetoed based on girl he disliked at school Angry )

Thora I'm not so keen on, prefer Thea, or Orla in a similar vein.

Guin1 · 04/01/2015 02:24

Prefer Hester. The one I knew had nn Hettie.

VenusRising · 04/01/2015 02:52

I always think of Mr Lee Scorsbey and his daemon Hester the hare*, when I hear the name Hester.

I like the name Hester, and also like Lyra, Marissa and Seraphina*

(*From his dark materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman)

TheCowThatLaughs · 04/01/2015 03:07

Thora Hird isn't a bad association though is it? She was a very talented actress with a long and illustrious career afaik. Thora and Hester are both nice, but don't "go" with Tilly, if that bothers you at all.

GregorysGirl18 · 04/01/2015 03:17

I like Thora. It makes me think of Thora Birch who was in Ghost World and American Beauty.

PrettyLittleMitty · 04/01/2015 08:50

Neither. Im sorry but I really dislike both names. Hester reminds me of something from the Addams family (?uncle fester) and Thora is just too old style for me.

capercaillie · 04/01/2015 08:55

Like both but would opt for Hester given you've got a girl with a T initial alreadt

Bellisperennis · 04/01/2015 11:37

I prefer Thora - I quite like Hester but think it can sound a bit harsh.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/01/2015 12:28

Thora. Purely because it less awful than Hester.
