I think Thomas is too popular, Joe and Sam are my favourite shortened names but I want a full name on the birth certificate. NOT into religion or royalty so please point out if I've missed any obvious references to either. Very anti-tory too. Baby due in April.

Stanley Frederick Surname is a strong possibility, and yes I do like Arthur, I'll add that to the list!

Ben would have to be Benjamin on the birth certificate of course.

If you want to swerve Biblical names, then not Thomas, Joel (quite a popular name for evangelist families), Samuel and Benjamin.

Leo is a papal name (there's been about 10 of them, so strong association amongst Catholics)

And if avoiding Royals, then scrub Edward (many King Edwards, plus of course the regal-sounding potato).

I like Arthur and Stanley a lot. Very classically English in their feel (I'm not English) but with cool nicknames and not too 'fey'. Perfick.

Ah, loads of religious ones I didn't know about, that's annoying. Are there any other names which shorten to Joe or Sam?

I have Callums and Kierans too close to me to steal the names, unfortunately as I like them both.

Joe and Sam are perfectly fine names in their own right. No reason not to have those on a birth certificate.

They are, I'd just rather give the child some choice with a possible variation or grown-up version. I guess we could do this with a middle name though.

well, for me Stanley would remind me of Stanley Baldwin so that would be out for an anti Tory.

The obvious (to me) alternative would be Keir (Hardie).

Lucas and Samuel are my favourites.

Samuel is my brothers name and it has suited him from birth until his late 20's now.

He's been called Samuel, sammy, Sam as well as other things.

Lucas was one of my favourite names - then my uncle called his son Luca - not the same I know but made me feel like I couldn't use Lucas.

It's nice because can be shorted to luke.
