We're having number five in 12 days and this is our front runner name. I'm slightly worried about pronunciation. What do people think and how would you pronounce it?

I'd pronounce it Dash-uhl - think that's how Dashiell Hammett pronounced it and that's the only namesake I know! Love it, but suspect it might be quite divisive...

If it matters, Dashiell Hammett's first name was Samuel. As a child he was known as Sam. Dashiell was his middle name - it was his mother's maiden surname. It was originally French but had been Anglicised by English-speaking settlers in America.

Some people like to use surnames as first names, others are not keen.

Thanks for everyone's opinions.

I know it's history. I'm a bit of name geek so research everything a million times over. I'm also aware it's not everyone's cup of tea but i love it!

Love it too. Dash is a amazing nickname. I'd say Dash-eel
