Would you make this connection?

I've name changed as these are identifiable details.
DH is Luke, DS1 is Mark, after my DF. I'm currently pregnant with DS2 and we would like to name him after DFIL, who is called John. Perfectly good name, but it means we'd have the names of three of the four gospels. Would people notice and/or make comments do you think?
My reservation is that its not like a film or TV show where people would quickly move on and forget the connection (like Elsa etc) and I'm worried about teasing. Am I overreacting?
(If we later have a DS3 I promise he won't be called Matthew!)

Yes definitely. Sorry if you dont want to hear that. What about Jonathan known as Jonty?

BiscuitMillionaire · 13/12/2014 23:39

I think some people would occasionally notice and make a little joke, but that's not a reason to change your mind. John is a great name, classic but not over-used. I don't think you would get playground teasing about the gospels!

Shesparkles · 13/12/2014 23:40

I don't think there's any doubt that they would. I have a relative with a Tom and a Harry...we're just waiting for Richard....

Bluestocking · 13/12/2014 23:40

I would definitely notice! And I would have to bite my tongue not to ask where Matthew was, but not in a mean way. They are great names and Mark and John are really underused these days. I'm not sure children would pick up on it - does anyone say the Black Paternoster anymore?

scarletforya · 13/12/2014 23:40

I would notice. But I would still use the name if you love them.

It reminds me of the prayer 'Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, God bless this bed that I lie on'

youbethemummylion · 13/12/2014 23:42

I dont think so, I certainly wouldn't. A few people might but that wouldn't bother me.

PrivateSecretaryNetwork · 13/12/2014 23:49

Bugger. Rox19 I quite like Jonty, but don't think we could get away with it around here, it's a bit too trendy London.

No, don't worry about it. Mostly, people will think about the boys names alone, not combined with your DH (or your name) so it will rarely be as obvious as you fear.

Redglitter · 13/12/2014 23:53

I think most people will make that association you'll probably forever more have people asking where's Matthew ~ and thinking they're hilarious and original in the process

ByeByeButterfly · 14/12/2014 00:31

I'd notice but wouldn't matter. My sister has a David, John, Rachel and Mark.

bouncingbelle · 14/12/2014 01:25

Name him john but call him Jack?

WittyUsername102 · 14/12/2014 10:01

I wouldn't notice - but I don't know any of the names of the gospels... But if you like the name I don't think it matters, there's much much worse things to have a connection to.

treaclesoda · 14/12/2014 10:05

I think people would definitely notice the connection but I can't see them being teased about them. They are very classic names, and nothing 'teasable'. Don't let it put you off if you like the name.

badtime · 14/12/2014 10:13

I would notice and think nothing of it.

My two brothers each have one of the gospel names, and I can't remember anyone ever saying anything negative (although there were a few comments, mainly because there were all four names among the local children).

burgatroyd · 14/12/2014 10:37

So what if they do? Its not something most people will dwell on

Deerhound · 14/12/2014 10:48

Parents might notice, but not children I think. And as has been said above, your Dh's name won't be linked with their's that much (he'll just be "John's dad"). I think it's fine.

Deerhound · 14/12/2014 10:50

I mean "theirs" . Oops!

hoobypickypicky · 14/12/2014 10:51

"Name him john but call him Jack?"

"What about Jonathan known as Jonty?"

Eh? You may as well name him Mabel if you're going to call him something else anyway!

Yes, people might notice and might remark but it will be in passing comment and quickly forgotten about and it's none of their business anyway! When they give birth to your son then they get to dictate what name you do or don't call him. Until then don't let "them" spoil what you want to call your boy.

And congratulations on your pregnancy too! Flowers

Boysandme · 14/12/2014 10:52

I don't think even if people notice that it'll be a big thing. Between Dh and 2 DSs we have two gospel names and another biblical name. There has only ever been a couple of comments and no negative comments.

If you like the names I really wouldn't worry about it. And they are nice straightforward names which I think is a good thing for boys.

jazzyjenbo · 14/12/2014 10:58

Yes and you would get comments about needing another ds to call him matthew... My 2 kids both have biblical names purely as they were the names we liked, now expecting dc3 and constantly get told it has to be a biblical name and start naming every biblical name they can think of!

manicinsomniac · 14/12/2014 18:36

I would notice but don't think it matters.

If you had 3 sons called Mark, Luke and John then I would be thinking 'Where's Matthew?' and find it a bit strange. But not 2 sons and a husband. They won't be named together too much.

PurplePidjingThroughTheSnow · 14/12/2014 18:42

The only time it would be obvious would be on Christmas cards, surely? And you'd have dh's name at the beginning - so Love From Luke, Private, Mark and John. Which isn't that obvious as it's out of "order" and I don't imagine many people would be so crass as to comment and if they are you can file them under Wanker and let contact drift

ZenNudist · 14/12/2014 18:46

Yes but it's not something you'd expect kids to notice and adults may make the obvious joke but otherwise so what?

It's a bit old fashioned as a joke. I wouldn't sweat it
