Care to share? Grin

And also, did you tell people beforehand or is it best to just announce once they're here?

Called DD a very unusual name - never seen it or heard it anywhere else yet and she's 18 now. We did tell people before and seemed to be well received
Her name is M a t y a (Mat-ee-a)

Love January. There were two in my high school in the early 90's, so not inspired by January Jones!

Purpleflamingos · 21/11/2014 21:14

Not outing myself but a lot of thought (a whole week of being stuck in a hospital with very little sleep) went into finding something that most people had vaguely heard of but wasn't popular or used very much. It's certain getting more popular now although it's outside the top 20.

ZebraZeebra · 21/11/2014 21:14

I only know it for the actress so I suppose that means I can't use it Wink

LOVE Matya!!

Jude was river Phoenix middle name; I always loved it. When I was a teenager there was a very feisty nurse in casualty called jude too and I kinda wanted a daughter of mine to have a strong name in the hope it would help her take on teh world. Long before dd was even thought of, a daughter of mines would be Jude. Her middle name is astrid, after Stuart sutcliffes German artist girlfriend, and the Swedish author.

Afton, bit of a dilemma, I didn't have another name that meant anything to me for a girl - she arrived early in a rush and we had to think fast. I'd met someone with the name through work and it was such a lovely name, we live in Robert Burns country and there is a poem by him which refers to the local river called Afton, it seemed fitting.

TobyLerone · 21/11/2014 21:16

Ffs. January is copying a month, if anything. Not January Jones! I'm not even sure who that is.

I like it.

DD2's name isn't particularly unusual (M e r e d i t h), but everyone always says it is.

Unusualnames · 21/11/2014 21:16

I've always liked Wednesday as a name too but wasn't brave enough Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/11/2014 21:17

As in Wednesday Adams?

TobyLerone · 21/11/2014 21:17

I met an adult Afton this year. She was absolutely lovely, and beautiful.

ZebraZeebra · 21/11/2014 21:18

Yes I remember that character! Love it for a girl as it's usually a boy's name, right? I'm sensing a theme of me liking boy's names for girls...

How exactly do you pronounce Afton?

As much as I love January, it doesn't really go with our surname. It was just an example of something a bit unusual, bit out there etc.

I still wish Dd(17) was called Tuesdat.

Spanielpuppy · 21/11/2014 21:20

Pretty pointless thread if no one is willing to share.

Your always going to get negative reactions to any name. It's too unusual, too common to old fashioned etc etc

If you and your partner love a name both agree then go for it.

I never told people my names but would drop it in, when they were giving me their own suggestions.

ZebraZeebra · 21/11/2014 21:20

Ha yes Wednesday also sprang to mind when I was pondering the remit Grin

I don't know if it's pointless Spaniel...lots of names being discussed and I'm having fun even if I'm on my own

My daughters are Nephele, Cressida and Odette.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 21/11/2014 21:32

I know a little girl called Ixia, which I think is pretty unusual.

Only1scoop · 21/11/2014 21:33

Beautiful winter.... do you shorten them?

Not a dd but my DS is R e d c l i f f e known as red.

We didn't make it public before he was born. Reactions were mixed. But it suits him and there is a story behind it that justifies a made up name in our opinions.

Thank you Zebra Grin

TobyLerone · 21/11/2014 21:35

DD's, you mean, coco? DS has a perfectly normal name which is shortened in a perfectly normal way :o

We do shorten DD's name, but not to the usual shortening (Merry, I suppose, which is lovely and we/she will no doubt use in the future). We shorten it to Mem, which is a version of what my 3yo nephew calls her because he can't pronounce her name :)
