Sorry, first timer posting on this topic but am(or maybe was!) strongly considering Toby for first son-to-be and have been reading the many Toby threads that seem to be around today! Certainly the name of the moment!

What puts me off more than anything is that it means penis in Scotland? have googled this and there are quite a few people who seem to confirm it!
I can't saddle a child with this name if it really is used in this way.
Do any other Scottish people confirm this?

I have never heard it used for penis, no. But Scotland has many regional variations so could just be that I have never heard it here on the more civillised east coast Wink

LemonBreeland · 18/11/2014 20:19

I've lived in Scotland for 13 years and never heard that. I have lived on the west coast and the east coast.

TheBogQueen · 18/11/2014 20:19

My weegie partner has never heard of that Confused

He did have a friend who named his cat 'dobber' though Grin

I like the urban dictionary meaning of Toby - suits all Toby's I know

A Toby is someone lovable, caring and stylish.
They are very good friends, and will always be there if you need a shoulder to lean on.
They can be a bit thoughtless at times with their choice of words, though it is rare for them to intentionally hurt you. Unless they dislike you.
Then they can be arrogant and selfish, and greedy and cold.
But overall, a Toby is definetely someone you would want as your friend/boyfriend; they are usually good-looking guys with a great personality.
Guy: Im going over to Toby's place, wanna come?
Guy2: Yeah, he is always fun to be around with.

Girl: Omg, that Toby is sooo hot and such a gentleman!
Girl2: Nah, he is always so arrogant towards me!
Girl: He must not like you then.

o0 · 18/11/2014 20:21

Never heard that either, and I'm Scottish.

ClaimedByMe · 18/11/2014 20:21

It does where I am in Scotland!!

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 18/11/2014 20:22

Not Toby, but I've know 'Bob' and 'Bobby' as poo growing up (mainly) in Lancashire.

espa · 18/11/2014 20:24

ClaimedByMe · 18/11/2014 21:01

Bowlersarm · 18/11/2014 21:04

If you don't live in Scotland, not sure why it would matter anyway.

chipsandpeas · 18/11/2014 21:06

never heard of this and lived in scotland all my life

those who say it does where are you

Catypillar · 18/11/2014 21:09

I've lived and/or worked in Paisley, Greenock, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Aberdeen, Perth, north Perthshire, Dundee, Inverness, Morayshire and the Western Isles- never heard of it and as a psychiatrist I tend to get treated to all the rude words! How have I missed this? Boaby, yes. Toby, wtf?

JakeyBurd · 18/11/2014 21:09

Never heard of this and I've lived here all my long life. Am dying to know whereabouts in Scotland this is the case though!

Mind you, if people can live with Willy, Bobby, Dick and John Thomas then I guess they can handle Toby too... Wink

AmandaTanen · 18/11/2014 21:10

Yep, means penis where I am too! Perthshire.

AhhhhhhryaOfGhostHouseSnark · 18/11/2014 21:18

I haven't heard of it before either, I am quite far down south in England, we have Dick and Willy for penis, Mary and Fanny for ...vulva.

squoosh · 18/11/2014 21:27

I live in Glasgow and am familiar with 'boaby' (fnar) but have never come across 'toby'.

Must be an East Coast thing.

Groovee · 18/11/2014 21:28

Scottish born and bred, never ever heard that Toby is a penis
