Sorry, first timer posting on this topic but am(or maybe was!) strongly considering Toby for first son-to-be and have been reading the many Toby threads that seem to be around today! Certainly the name of the moment!

What puts me off more than anything is that it means penis in Scotland? have googled this and there are quite a few people who seem to confirm it!
I can't saddle a child with this name if it really is used in this way.
Do any other Scottish people confirm this?

Hmm yeh apparently a Corey is a penis too...

espa · 18/11/2014 22:09

Any advance on Dundee?

CluelessDil · 18/11/2014 22:16

Eh? Never heard that?! Another one who thinks it must be getting confused with 'boaby'

CorporateRockWhore · 18/11/2014 22:23

Dundee here too

Squtternutbaush · 18/11/2014 22:27

I thought the poster had confused Toby with Boaby :o

I'm Scottish and have lived/worked/had friends all over yet never heard this.

Justnapping · 18/11/2014 22:29

Yes it means penis in Dundee!! And fife

peggyundercrackers · 18/11/2014 22:29

Yep toby can be a penis, I always thought it was spelt toaby though. Also heard people using the word toab/tobe to describe a penis.

deste · 18/11/2014 22:39

Never heard Toby or Boaby ever used in that way in my life and I am in Aberdeen.

MrsMot · 18/11/2014 22:41

Nope, not heard it. From Edinburgh, lived in Aberdeen, family from west coast.

NeedaDiscoNap · 18/11/2014 22:44

What the what now?! Have never heard of that in my life! Suppose it sounds much nicer than the Glaswegian 'boaby' Grin.

I hate the word boaby. Think too many daft boys used to use it all the bloody time at school. Boys and their boabies.

stargirl1701 · 18/11/2014 22:46

I'm in Perthshire and I have never heard this. Boaby, yes.

squoosh · 18/11/2014 22:49

Yes 'boaby' is a hideous word generally used by hideous men.

'A'ri doll, dae ya want a wee shoogle of ma boaby'.

Honeymoonmummy · 18/11/2014 22:52

Squoosh, it's not often a post makes me laugh out loud but that did! Grin I haven't a clue (North west of England) but what an entertaining thread! Grin

CluelessDil · 18/11/2014 22:53

'A wee shoogle of ma baoby'? Wtf?! Please tell me where in Scotland you are so I can avoid Grin

Not sure why 'shoogle' offends me more than boaby but it just does! Yuk.

carbolicsoaprocked · 18/11/2014 22:58

East Coast here, it means that where I live.

peggyundercrackers · 18/11/2014 23:03

i think the people who have never heard of Toby being used as penis need to go and ask a man " can I see your Toby" and see what reaction they get.

I've also heard quite a few people using the word toabing which generally means shagging - as in "i Need a good toabing.

Boab or Boabby is generally a west coat saying, definitely not an East coast thing.

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/11/2014 23:04

I'm from near Glasgow, never heard of Toby meaning penis, must be a pretty localised nickname.

Sunbeam18 · 18/11/2014 23:08

I've lived in Ayrshire, Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh and never heard this!

nostringsattached · 18/11/2014 23:10

Toby means penis where I'm from too Grin (just outside Dundee) I always thought it was a Scottish nickname...obviously not tho from most comments

olaflikeswarmhugs · 18/11/2014 23:17

I'm Scottish and I have never heard that Shock

Fwiw I like it as a name Grin

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/11/2014 23:17

Never heard this. Grew up in Glasgow, now live in Edinburgh. I know a Toby well and he's never mentioned it being an issue!

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 19/11/2014 08:40

Aberdeenshire and I've never head this.

I've heard of Willie, Boaby and (once) Robbie (the Robbie one might have been trying to use a posh form of Boaby).

espa · 19/11/2014 09:05

Looks like it's a Dundee and close surrounds thing then, so maybe one to be avoided in Tayside/Fife!

SquirrelledAway · 19/11/2014 09:41

It appears in the Dictionary of the Scots Language here. I think the reference refers to Aberdeen and Angus, although having stayed in Aberdeen for the last 15 years I've never heard it (although there aren't many kids here called Toby either).

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 09:41

sqoosh!

That made me giggle.
On a serious note Boaby is quite a nice name....
