Will Josephina automatically be Jo?

I like Josephina, OH likes Stephanie (as per my previous thread.) I have a friend called Josefina, goes by Fina, which I like. She is Belgian, and OH is convinced that, like it or not, in the UK, Jo is inevitable. What do you reckon?

I would think Josie quite likely (which I love). You could try and aim for Depth, but you don't always get a choice in these things!

Josephina sounds very clunky to me. Jo would be a blessing.

I know a Josephine who is a Sepphy (not sure how it is spelt) which is very cute.

I think the thing with any long name is that you have to be willing to live with the nickname if it happens, unless all the child is ever to be known by is the nickname. Does that make sense? An example might work better:

If you have an Elizabeth who is always, always known as Libby, chances are she will stay a Libby. If you have an Elizabeth who is sometimes Elizabeth and sometimes Lizzie, there is a fair chance as an adult she might be known as Liz.

Whilst she is a child, you have more control. If you call her Josie, others will follow your lead.

Oh, on the name itself. I prefer Josephine to Josephina. Josephina does sound a bit 'jumping on the bandwagon of every girls' name this century having to end with an a' to me. Sorry.

I have been offered a lovely range of shortenings, on this thread, but the overriding feeling seems to be I've managed to find a clunky name, clunked it up some more, then added a dose of bandwagon oh bums. I can't really use the ie shortenings, as my son already has one, which is plenty for me. Sephie is lovely though

Oh no, I didn't mean to make you sad. I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet at the moment about the number of 'a' ending girls names. My DD1 has one, then I realised just how common they were and I swore off them for DD2. She has a really marmite name which I've seen described on here as ugly, clunky and hideous. DD1's name is apparently getting far too common, try hard, etc. If you love it, that's all that matters (you know, unless you are about to name the poor child Fifi-trixie-bella-May)

I actually like less 'frilly' names anyway - much prefer Josephine to Josephina, Isabel to Isabella, Julie to Julia, etc, etc. I also love names like Ruth.

Stephanie is fab too. Probably really rare in her age group too. I've always wanted an Effy (though I note you're not doing y endings, so no good to you).

The 'a' ending feels redundant and adds one syllable too many to take it over the edge.

I agree with Penguins about nicknames. If she wants to be Sephie she needs to introduce herself as such. If she is known as Josephina then I think from some people who can't stop themselves from shortening names Jo is inevitable.

Wasn't there a thread on here he other day about Josephene /Josephine names and the majority of adults that had them actually didn't really like the name at all and its a tad embarrassing as a child

I don't know anyone called Josephina, but I know a girl called Josephine (who must now be about 14) whose mum has always called her Jo, but she had to positively ask before anyone at school would call her Jo. New people sometimes asked her if she liked being called Josie but never Jo. I think maybe more people think of Jo as being short for Joanne.

I know a toddler Josephina and whilst I didn't like it to begin with, it's really grown on me. She is often called Josie. Never Jo.
