Just wanted some opinions on this name. I love it and it is my Nan's name and dh great grandma's name.

BUT, does it make you think 'the elephant? And how popular is it now? I'd hate to lumber a child with a name where they could be teased for any weight problems, especially as I'm chunky myself.

I love Nell and don't think 'elephant' when I hear it.

I dislike Nellie and definitely do think 'elephant' when I hear it.

I think opera singer when I hear the name Nellie/Nelly (Nellie Melba or Nelly Miricioiu).

I have an older relative called Nell, but everyone seems to call her Nellie, even though she hates it. And she grew up being teased mercilessly with the Nellie the Elephant song. When a family member wanted to name their child after her, she actually begged them not to do it. Having said that, I think it is really cute, but would never use it myself because of her experience.

Don't mind Nell. Absolutely hate Nelly. Same goes for DP's Aunty Nell, age 81.

It's a great name Smile
(but not Nellie - not on your nellie...).

I love Nell and would probably nickname her Nelly.

shakemysilliesout · 31/10/2014 19:07

Billie off Towie used it recently for her baby girl

I love Nell, but don't like Nellie at all. It reminds me of:

  1. Nellie the elephant
  2. Nellie Olsen the mean girl from Little House on the Prairie

I know several Eleanors who are known as Nell. My grandmother was also a Nelly, I really like it.

Nell is lovely, but Nellie/Nelly is awful.

The trouble with Nell is that Nellie/Nelly as a nickname would be almost inevitable.

Thank you all for the feedback, I think that's managed to convince dh!

I don't like Nell. It is dull.

Nelly is the elephant and will be until the end of time.

Choccyhobnob · 03/11/2014 12:57

I know a 7 year old Nell and a 1yr old Nellie (but the 1yo is in Australia) don't think it's that popular (but def prefer Nell to Nellie)
