Will this name seem faddy?

so one of the very very few girl's names DH and I both like is Amaya. it's a Spanish name and stolen from a little girl in DS's crèche.

I like it but it's obviously very similar to Maya which along with Mia seems quite in these days. i like those names but would prefer something that won't be easily identifiable with a particular decade if you get me.

will it get lumped in with the mayas and mias of this generation and date potential DD or is it different enough to be viewed differently?

Hmmm, well I know an Amaia who's in her late 20s but I do think it sounds very "now." Pretty name though.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 20/10/2014 19:29

I like it, very pretty.

I know an Amara and an Ayanna which I think are both pretty and a bit different too.

Sophronia · 20/10/2014 22:46

I also think it sounds very "now." I know an Alaia and an Alayah as well which are quite similar sounding.

Not at all faddy and nothing like Mia/Maya.

To me it sounds south asian.

Go for it!

babyblabber · 21/10/2014 15:44

hmmm thanks girls. it's a tricky one, the maya/mia thing making me hesitate but not sure if it should!

It's lovely and unusual and I think you should choose it.

LumpyCustard69 · 21/10/2014 22:37

It's pretty. I also like Naraya, which I think is also Spanish (heard it in Majorca a few years ago).

Devora · 21/10/2014 22:44

It's very pretty. I like Amara too.

callamia · 21/10/2014 22:48

I know a baby Amaya, and I'd never considered to be like a Mia or Maya. It's lovely.

Littlefish · 21/10/2014 22:52

I have several children in the nursery where I work called variations of this name. (6 out of 28)

BackforGood · 21/10/2014 23:03

I wouldn't say faddy, but if I saw it on a list, I'd assume the child was Asian.
If you are in UK, I think it is not well known and she would have to spend her life spelling it for people, and explaining it's origin, which is something I preferred to avoid for my dc.

moojie · 21/10/2014 23:11

I know a grown up Amaia (she is Spanish) I think it's a beautiful name Smile

SurfsUp1 · 22/10/2014 00:10

Lovely name and not faddy. Then again I went to school with more Mia's than I come across these days, so not sure that one's all that faddy either.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 22/10/2014 00:15

I think it's a lovely name.

I would group it (if grouping it at all) with Soraya, Natalia etc. Not with Mia - although I also like the name Mia.

It's a name I would definitely use.

squeak2392 · 22/10/2014 01:50

I don't think so. It's not popular and it's a completely different sort of name.

Xmasbaby11 · 22/10/2014 15:04

I've never heard of it. I think she would be spelling it for people a lot - as long as that does not bother you.

I know an Anaia - but often mispronounced / misheard as Anya which might get annoying. I don't think Amaya will become as popular as Mia and Maya - go for it!

OVienna · 23/10/2014 22:30

Have you googled it? It's the name if a Canadian gambling company that just bought Poker Stars. (Sorry but in the event they kick of a big advertising campaign I thought you might want to know.)

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 00:34

Just googled Amaya Gaming and Poker Stars. I think it's unlikely that Amaya Gaming would change the name of Poker Stars as it's the market leader and a name change would be counter-productive for a web based business.

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 00:36

I've been trying to remember how I know the name, and just realised I met a lovely Amaya who was from Ecuador. Lovely girl and a lovely name.

postmanpatscat · 25/10/2014 12:56

It's a middle name for a 7yo girl I know, it's lovely.
