Thoughts on Violet and Scarlet?

Honest thoughts please. They're not shortlisted yet as not sure how they're perceived.

I quite like the trend of colours as names - we have a Jade and a Coral in the wider family, and I've looked after an Amber.

You're having twins are you, or is it an either / or scenario. I'd prefer Scarlet to Violet, but I don't know why. Maybe I perceive Violet to be an 'older' person's name than a babies one. If you are having twins, I think it's quite cute.

hollie84 · 19/10/2014 19:36

Much prefer Violet. I find Scarlet quite harsh sounding and it's more popular at the moment. Violet is a bit more classic imo.

andadietcoke · 19/10/2014 19:38

I love Scarlet and if it wasn't for our surname being Brown I would have seriously considered it. For twins I'm not sure about the two together with the -let endings but that's just me not loving matching twin names!

moxon · 19/10/2014 19:43

Violet over Scarlet.

fancyacupoftea · 19/10/2014 20:05

No, not twins, sorry for the confusion - just possible names! There's more that aren't either of those names but I'm weirdly drawn to these although DH may need convincing.

I really want to like Violet but it just sounds too close to violent for me...

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 19/10/2014 20:18

I like them both, prefer Violet (i never got the sounds like violent thing - do you think Anna sounds like anal too?)

But i like Scarlett too - it gets flack on here (and only here afaik) for being a stripper name, which i don't get. It's a 'bigger' name imo - Violet feels like a slightly quieter name.

northernlurker · 19/10/2014 20:20

I think Violet is prettier and less common. Vi is nice too for a short for an adult.

Bonsoir · 19/10/2014 20:22

I prefer Violet to Scarlett.

Azur is less common and another colour name....

blueemerald · 19/10/2014 20:24

I know it's not logical...

moxon · 19/10/2014 20:25

Azur? Hmm. To go with siblings Prussian, Magenta, and Cadmium?

BlueStarsAtNight · 19/10/2014 20:35

I'm not sure about them.
Violet makes me think of shrinking violet and I picture a very shy quiet girl. Whereas Scarlett makes me think of someone a bit brash and bolshy. They just don't conjure up a nice picture for me.

DecaffTastesWeird · 19/10/2014 20:53

Absolutely love Violet. Not super keen on Scarlett though - think it's maybe a little harsh as a pp said.

NeedaDiscoNap · 19/10/2014 20:56

I love Violet. Was on our shortlist for DD - love old lady names! We went for a different name in the end as it was a better fit for DD's middle name (after a relative).

People do seem to have negative associations with Violet but I think it's a beautiful name. Not v keen on Scarlett.

Lunastarfish · 19/10/2014 21:01

Tough one, I love both! At a push I'd go for Scarlett.

DramaAlpaca · 19/10/2014 21:12

I like Violet a lot, it makes me think of the colour & the flower.

I'm not so keen on Scarlet/Scarlett. I agree with others that it's quite harsh sounding, and it reminds me of the illness scarlet fever.

NickiFury · 19/10/2014 21:13

Love Violet, one of my favourite names. Scarlet very common now I think, not keen.

fancyacupoftea · 19/10/2014 21:16

Oddly, I've always thought scarlet fever sounds exotic. You are all echoing what DH said about Scarlet though - he thinks it's harsh sounding too. His favourite is actually Esme, I'm not sure of the longevity of the name into adulthood though.

Exactly this. And Scarlet just reminds me of a red scar. Shame as they're otherwise nice names.

Roobix04 · 20/10/2014 10:22

Violet was on my short list. But I've always liked the name as it was my great grandma's and we were close. Unfortunately dp didn't like it.

aardvarkisagoodword · 20/10/2014 10:35

I really dislike both names. Violet makes me think of Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Scarlet of the Mysterons. Also quite twee imo. Agree with the pp who said Juliet and Harriet if you like the ending. Much more classic and elegant.

lisej · 20/10/2014 10:51

I like both - Violet just slightly more than Scarlett. And I definitely see Scarlett as being a dark haired girls name - it doesn't work for a blonde, somehow.

DecaffTastesWeird · 20/10/2014 15:18

I know a lady in her 70s named Esme. I also overheard a teenaged college student yelling Esme to a friend across the train carriage so think it does have longevity. I still prefer Violet though.
