How is the name Skype perceived in the UK?

We are thinking of this name for baby if it' a girl (due in just over a week) , but I am not sure what people think of it in the UK. I am oringinally from Australia, where it is thought of quite well and would be a good choice, possibly thought of as slightly hippy as it seemed popular in the 70s.

What are your perceptions, the connotations of it here?

is this a typo for Skye?

slightlyglitterstained · 19/10/2014 09:08

Um, it would be seen as "you named your baby after a messaging app?"

I didn't know it was a name as well - pity as it sounds nice! But the overwhelming association would be with the app.

mrsmilkymoo · 19/10/2014 09:08

x posted!

lill72 · 19/10/2014 09:09

Yes Mrs!!! Hmmm there's my first issue!!

I'm assuming you mean Skye.
I have known a couple of Skyes.
In my opinion it is perceived as a proper name now, rather than some hippy nonsense.

CoteDAzur · 19/10/2014 09:09

Please let the thread continue for the name Skype Grin

velocity1 · 19/10/2014 09:09

Skye is lovely, Skype not so much Smile

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 19/10/2014 09:10

Skye is lovely. I'd wonder maybe if she was a connection to island. But I think it's a lovely name.

Your autocorrect would soon learn!

EdithWeston · 19/10/2014 09:10

You don't change it, you just enjoy it Grin

Presumable DYAC as middle name?

(Skye's fine, BTW)

slightlyglitterstained · 19/10/2014 09:10

Ah okay, typo Grin

Maybe you could ask MN to edit it? Or just start a new thread....

lill72 · 19/10/2014 09:10

I'll let it go Cote - at least it's getting lots of responses - and funny ones at that!!

if she was a connection? if she had a connection!

Shlep · 19/10/2014 09:11

I like Skye. I think it's considered a not too out there name nowadays. I love it actually, wanted to call DD2 that (turned out to be a DS).

moxon · 19/10/2014 09:12

Oh how I lol'd. Grin
Skye is fine, even though not to my taste (cf Savannah, Sienna, etc etc etc). It be an island, you know.

lill72 · 19/10/2014 09:12

I just saw another typo in my original post - think it is too early in the morning for this!!

Hahahahaha.

slightlyglitterstained · 19/10/2014 09:13

FWIW, Skye doesn't sound particularly "out there" or hippy. Unless her second name is Rainbow or Cloud IYSWIM.

MrSheen · 19/10/2014 09:14

Totally normal name now, but I remember when Skye Mangel was born it was a hippy name. There are quite a few 'normal' Scottish Island names.

KatieKaye · 19/10/2014 09:14

Whew that it's Skye!

Perceived as a perfectly normal name. Nobody would really think little Skye had any more to do with the Isle of Skye that a child called Iona, Harris etc was connected to the islands.
