How is the name Skype perceived in the UK?

We are thinking of this name for baby if it' a girl (due in just over a week) , but I am not sure what people think of it in the UK. I am oringinally from Australia, where it is thought of quite well and would be a good choice, possibly thought of as slightly hippy as it seemed popular in the 70s.

What are your perceptions, the connotations of it here?

Skype Hightower. Police Academy 10: the legend lives on.

UnwittingAccomplice · 19/10/2014 09:18

I wouldn't because I don't think it's versatile enough. I don't think of "Skye" as a judge or an accountant. I think of Skye as a massage therapist or the lady who owns the local newsagency. But then I'm not British Smile

Ha ha - belly laugh!

These baby name threads are just awesome. Skype. Brilliant.

Anyway - Skye. Parents trying too hard.

AlpacaYourThings · 19/10/2014 09:21

Oh no! It's awful.

tilbatilba · 19/10/2014 09:24

I love it

MokunMokun · 19/10/2014 09:27

My friend's daughter is called Skye. I think it's a lovely name!

This thread actually made me laugh out loud. Brilliant typo!! Just make sure you don't do it when filled out her birth certificate.

ScrambledSmegs · 19/10/2014 09:27

I prefer Facetime sorry

I don't know about Skye. I always associate it with the joke name, Isla Skye. Presumably that has a bearing on my feelings of 'meh'. But you should go for it if you love it, because one person's iffy sense of humour shouldn't deter you :)

Has anyone checked the ONS (or the american equivalent, for more luck) for any babies registered as Skype over the last few years?

LittleBairn · 19/10/2014 11:45

It's a normal commonly used name in Scotland no one would think of it as an odd choice.

Behoove · 19/10/2014 11:47

A brother for Text?

giraffescantboogie · 19/10/2014 11:47

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/10/2014 11:49

I was Shock at Skype!

Skye is fine though Grin

NotDavidTennant · 19/10/2014 11:49

I think it would only work if the siblings were Snapchat and WhatsApp.

Flipflops7 · 19/10/2014 20:34

Skye is nice.

Skype is one of Balonz's sisters :)

museumum · 19/10/2014 20:38

Skye is pretty normal bordering on quite popular here (Edinburgh). Not as over popular as Isla but nearly.

lill72 · 19/10/2014 21:47

Museumum - that's interesting. I'm in London and have not heard of a Skye here. Though it is in the top 100 names

HolgerDanske · 20/10/2014 09:22

I like the name Skye. Very pretty.

squoosh · 20/10/2014 11:26

Skye is so much nicer than that other popular island name Isla.
