using family middle names, is it odd to worry about keeping it even between both sides?

Just found out I'm pg with DC3.

While vaguely TTC I have been pondering names which I find really hard to pick (as most probably do!).

Our DC each have a middle name which is a member of the family, one from each side IYSWIM.

If we were to use DC2's unused name (we had one for girl/boy) that would mean two middle names from one side and one from another.

Do you think any of them would care, or maybe they'll be to busy doing Shock faces at the idea of another baby. . .

I still like the name and it would save some thinking.

My dc 1 and 2 have middle names from dp's side. Dc3 has one from my side so i guess we are uneven. I don't think anyone cares! Am pg with dc4 tho so potentially we could even up!

If DC has mother's surname, choose middle name from father's side. If DC has father's surname, choose middle name from mother's side. If you're a hyphenated family surname, you're screwed, so go with something unrelated that you like.

Unless dc3 has a first name taken from one side or family (needn't be someone's first name if this would be confusing), and middle name from the other side.

This is why I was rather pleased to have uncles with the same name on both sides of the family.

I don't think PiL realise DS1's middle name is my brother's/fathers/grandfathers/great grandfathers middle name.
My parents know DS2's middle name is FiL's first name!

So, is the name known to be a family name? If its not going to be realised by the other side of the family, does it matter?

If you love the name, I'd use it. Who knows, maybe DC4 will arrive in a couple of years, and you can even it up again Grin

Although everyone should understand that with 3 dc you are always going to be unbalanced on family names.

It's just a middle name, but sounds nice with the first name we had picked last time. It's a grandparent's name so definitely known. :)

Noooo! Definitely no DC 4. Unless it's twins.

All four of my dc's have a middle name from my side of the family. Dp's mum and uncle(never met his dad) have quite boring names and Dp already has his granddads name as a middle name so I never even thought about it being one sided.
The way I saw it was they had the chance to name their children and I have the chance to name mine so I, and Dp will pick name s we love and if they have family connections then so be it

Cheers.

Kids do have DH's surname, I have decided that makes it fine to have 2 middles from my side. Grin

I bet I don't even get to use the name :)
