DD (our first - and almost certainly only - girl after 2 DSs) is due soon and we are really struggling with girls' names. We found naming the boys quite easy. They both have traditional / classic not very popular but not unusual either names. This time round a boy would have been Alexander (Alex) or Hugh.

There are lots of names which either DH or I like, but we have struggled to find a middle ground. He has dismissed many of my suggestions as too unusual (read 'pretentious'); I find many of his too frilly.

I think we are looking for something classic, not faddy, known but not overly popular (ideally not top 50ish), and fairly strong but feminine.

Our agreed on shortlist, pretty much in the following order, is as follows (comments and suggestions would be appreciated!):

Clara (was front runner for most of my pregnancy, now worried that it will get very popular and seem faddy)
Louisa (nicknames worry me - we don't really like Lou or LouLou)
Helena (would probably be our favourite, but it's not brilliant with our surname. Although not a disaster either)
Martha (not sure that it passes the "classic" test, but love it)
Georgina (Georgie)
Sara (can't decide whether this is lovely and simple, or a bit "meh")
Tess (feels a little like a nickname, but not keen on Teresa / Tessa. Esther would be a possibility, but may be stretching it?).

Clara is my favourite from your list.

I was going to say Emma fits your requirements very well. So glad you're considering it.

DS shares a name with one of DH's oldest friends. It's never caused us any issues and we don't regret choosing it. In fact I think it's bonded them a little bit as the friend was the one that DS took to really quickly and he looks up to him now. Grin

Playdoughcaterpillar · 17/10/2014 13:05

Love Martha, what about louise, but I do like Loulou. Rachel?

momb · 17/10/2014 13:06

Trying to think of names which woudl go with names which go well with Hugh or Alexander is quite hard!
I like the ones on your list except Tess.
Throwing Bridget, Anna and Jane into the mix.

ThereIsIron · 17/10/2014 13:07

Clara, or Freya

Shil0846 · 17/10/2014 13:21

Lucinda (Lucy) was my favourite if DS had been a girl, but I also love Helena and Louisa.

fishfingerSarnies · 17/10/2014 13:33

Nancy, Elizabeth, Eliza, Beatrix, Lara, Annabell

Timetoask · 17/10/2014 13:35

OP, as I was reading your post, I was thinking Helena

BauerTime · 17/10/2014 13:42

What about Nancy? Or is it your name?

IHateHelloKitty · 17/10/2014 14:46

I thought Louisa or Martha while reading your OP - both fantastic names! Love Esther too.

What do you think of Adelaide (nn Ada?), Agatha, Antonia, Astrid, Mathilde/Mathilda, Ingrid, Alexa?

Kim82 · 17/10/2014 15:12

I've recently had a little girl and the names on my list which fit your criteria were:

Emma
Charlotte
Anna

We did also have Erin on the list which we didn't use but I still love. I don't think it's a classic, traditional name though.

Sophronia · 17/10/2014 17:53

I like Martha and I'd consider it a classic. Lula could be a nickname for Louisa?

How about:

Susanna
Emmeline
Jennifer

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/10/2014 18:04

All the Elinor/Eleanor's I've known have been Elle (pronounced El) or in one case Elo. No Ellie's.

I think Clara is beautiful. But I do imagine a beautiful, glamorous Spanish Clara who I once met every time I think of the name.

RabbitSaysWoof · 17/10/2014 21:29

Martha is lovely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/10/2014 21:32

Lovely names/ Don't like Georgina/Georgie but like all of the others. Clara and Martha are my favourites. Louisaa nice mn.

Aherdofmims · 17/10/2014 22:45

I was also going to suggest Elena.

Also possible Georgia rather than Georgina.

I was going to call ds Vivienne if he had been a girl if that helps (yes I know it can be a boys name but didn't want it for a boy)

I also like Imogen, Elin, Abigail, Katherine which also fit the classic test.

barmybunting · 17/10/2014 23:08

3 of your names are on our list for DC1 due in a few weeks so I thought some of our other ideas might be a similar style.

From your list, Clara is far my favourite!

Other ideas:
Hazel
Susannah
Anna
Elise
Alice
Faye
Naomi
Leah

kaymondo · 17/10/2014 23:18

I love Clara (ds2 would have been Clara if he'd have been a girl) but isn't there one on doctor who now? I just have a feeling that it's going to be the new Isla - another beautiful name but absolutely everywhere!

Lucked · 17/10/2014 23:23

So many of your names were on our short list too. I like Sara, Tess and Clara. Have you considered Cora?

thatsn0tmyname · 17/10/2014 23:26

Alexandra, Joanna , Lucinda, Belinda?

Tulipsandclogs · 18/10/2014 00:07

Annie
Scarlett
Pippa
Alicia
Esme
Cecilly
Eliza
Sunny
Lana
Agatha

I must say, my daughter has thanked me for her name! (phew) all names are beautiful but she says within school there are so many of this name and that name, and they often use the surname initial in classes etc when calling out, my daughter is Bo (her brothers nicknamed her Peep!) and there are no others (yet!) in school, when I call her name in public only she hears me. She has 3 George's, 2 Lily's etc in a class of 18? What I am trying to say is it is possible to be a little unique, I think our children love 'cool' names these days : ) whatever you choose will be perfect, nobody has a name that doesn't suit them do they : ) Let us know what you choose!

SoonToBeSix · 18/10/2014 00:10

Martha or Eleanor are lovely.

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 18/10/2014 00:11

I really like Mary, elegant and classic and Grace and Eliza, pretty feminine names.

FrancisdeSales · 18/10/2014 00:14

Georgina is lovely

Tess is boring
Martha also sounds very worthy

RattysPicnic · 18/10/2014 00:18

Henrietta
Joanna (love the nickname Jojo!)
Jane
Hannah
Sarah
Susannah
Polly
