Deirdre is one of the major characters in Corrie, and that association would be far too strong for me to find it useable. Also, is the Dear Deirdre column still going?

Tealady1983 · 17/10/2014 05:01

Both awful sorry op Hmm

Mumonabroom · 17/10/2014 05:20

I absolutely love Daphne, currently expecting myself but have been vetoed. Sigh.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 17/10/2014 05:45

Daphne. Deirdre is horrendous

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 17/10/2014 05:50

Love daphne! Deirdre is... not to my taste Grin

Surfsup1 · 17/10/2014 05:50

Daphne is a bit twee (nn Daffy/Daff?), but Deirdre is just awful. Sorry!!

BikeRunSki · 17/10/2014 05:51

Deirdre is dreary.
Daphne is better, but still not particularly nice, and I'll forever associate it with "Frasier".

idtwinplustoddlermum · 17/10/2014 06:25

I couldn't label a child with either, sorry op. Both names a bit ugly I'm afraid.

joanofarchitrave · 17/10/2014 06:35

Daphne. One of my dearest friends has the name and it's a beautiful sound. But i think you still probably need to be quite a cool family to pull it off - I wouldn't use it because in my M&S trousers and sensible bob I would be the wrong area.

Not sure about Helen as a second name - is it a family name? If not, I can see why you'd go 100% Greek but in the UK you're pulling in the whole 70s thing and it might be a bit much tbh. I think you want to go more extreme. So, Daphne Cymbeline, Daphne Helena?

eurochick · 17/10/2014 06:37

Sorry but I don't like either!

peppinagiro · 17/10/2014 08:11

Both awful. Deirdre Ann is really, really awful - just so dreary. Daphne is less all-out hideous, but I agree you'd need to be a really cool hipster family to pull it off, and a less dreary second name would help.

JabberJabberJay · 17/10/2014 08:13

Deirdre is dire. Just awful. Daphne is slightly better.

Kantha · 17/10/2014 08:18

I really don't like Deirdre.

I like Daphne. In fact my 3yo is currently lobbying for DC3 to be called this, but only because he watches too much Scooby Doo. Grin

I think Helen is even better and would personally use that as a first name.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 17/10/2014 08:22

If you must have either then daphne.
It just makes me think of scooby doo though. Better than neck almighty Deirdre though!

moxon · 17/10/2014 09:46
Hmm
Turquoisetamborine · 17/10/2014 09:47

I don't like either of them. I work with a Deirdre and she detests her name. Her nickname at school was dreary.

Shesparkles · 17/10/2014 09:50

Are you Scottish? Daphne Broon? I don't post on name threads when I only have something negative to say, but please don't use Ann, even as a middle name. It's part of my (double barrelled) first name and I hate it, it's such a non-name, even more boring than Jane

Wishyouwould · 17/10/2014 09:54

Neither. Probably the worst two first names I've heard. So many lovely names around too. Each to their own I guess.

jasper · 17/10/2014 10:05

Daphne, utterly wonderful! you'd be bold to call a child that but I am all for resurrecting the name Daphne.

Daphne Broon is a LEGEND !!!

jasper · 17/10/2014 10:06

Daphne Jean?

squoosh · 17/10/2014 10:35

Deirdre isn't pronounced Deer-dree á la Corrie, it's actually pronounced Deer-dra. Not crazy about it though and if you're in the UK people would think you were naming here in honour of La Barlow. If you're in Ireland they won't.

Sylviet · 17/10/2014 11:34

I'm glad some of you like Daphne! Daphne Helena is definitely a possibility.

I would say we are a cool hipsterish family, yes. We don't watch TV and hadn't thought that a soap opera character could actually have so much clout ?

Do you think you all so negative about Deirdre because of coronation street?
We thought if it as an Irish name pronounced Deerdra.

wigglesrock · 17/10/2014 11:41

I quite like Daphne, I don't like Deirdre at all. I wouldn't think of Corrie so much, but it's very old fashioned and not in it'll be cool again way. I'm in NI and I know quite a few, they all dislike their name - always did. It's less granny chic and more nosy neighbour who'd tell your mum if she saw you talking to a boy.
