Daphne would have been on my list for DC2 had DC1 been Ursula, but DH had very different lists! I like Daphne, Deirdre not so much.

ZuluBob · 17/10/2014 19:55

Deirdre - Nope, I don't like this name Sad

Daphne - Yep, I love this name Smile

Ham69 · 17/10/2014 19:56

Daphne Helen is lovely. Deirdre sounds too much like dreary and really associate it with big glasses and fags. Sorry!

I think that Daphne is lovely, quite elegant and timeless. I also like Della and Dahlia.....

Delphine is wonderful tooGeorgie.

But Deidre would be an absolute no no for me sorry.... Just sounds really gloomy name, I cannot imagine calling a child by that name......

MehsMum · 17/10/2014 19:57

I like the name Daphne. I suggested it years ago for various DDs - no go with DH.

I knew a lovely pair of old ladies years ago called Daphne and Peggy. Peggy is (I gather) trendy at the mo and I can't understand why Daphne isn't because it's much nicer. Peggy sounds like something you need for the clothesline.

Bowlersarm · 17/10/2014 20:00

Doesn't follow the 'rule' but Claudia. Or Allegra. Antonia. Aurelia .

Delphine is lovely - very Cold Comfort Farm though I think that might have been Elphine. I know a strapping Daphne - well over 6 foot and thats put me off a bit as shes quite the bruiser.

Raidne · 17/10/2014 20:40

Deirdre makes me think of "Deirdre of the Sorrows", a bloody awful play by JM Synge that I had to study at school. >

bouncingbelle · 17/10/2014 20:45

What about saoirse? (Pronounced seer-sha). I love this name but my dp can't even say it never mind spell it so I,ll never get to use it!

Sylviet · 17/10/2014 20:46

Claudia, no, I think claud is a male name, like paul.

Allegra is a car.

Antonia will be called Toni. ( fine wines and Belgian chocolates?)

Aurelia seems like the practice name for an Ear Clinic.

I think with your strong - er - opinions about names offered, you don't need any more names.

You can take negativity over Deirdre or daphne so stick with one of those.

islandinthestream · 17/10/2014 20:54

My great aunt was Daphne Helen! I think it's a fab name and would LOVE to use for DD2 although agree with others it might raise a few eyebrows in non-hipster circles. The Deirdres I know are Irish and go by Dee, which is a pretty cool name.

Yika · 17/10/2014 21:00

Daphne is beautiful, ethereal, delicate. I love it!

Trick0rTreatSmellYourFeet · 17/10/2014 21:03

Deirdre but the irish way (deerdra) not barlow. Deeerdreee yak.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/10/2014 21:50

Sorry both terrible names for a little girl. but if they were the only 2 names in the world. I'd go with Daphne Helena. Helena is a name though as is Ann

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/10/2014 21:51

Helena is a pretty name as is an that should have said.

WasherCap · 17/10/2014 21:54

Deirdre is dire.
Daphane at a very big push.
Dana is cool, best so far.
Serena is ok
Venetia reminds me of the blinds.

WasherCap · 17/10/2014 21:54

*Daphne

Sylviet · 17/10/2014 22:00

Lots of you Really love the name Daphne, and I think Helen or Helena gets a positive reception too.

I like the Greek connection. Daphne Helena.

Very sorry to all the Deirdres reading this thread, that your name is currently out of favour.

How anyone can think being called what sounds like an abbreviation of a yoghurt or bacon brand is 'cool', I'm not sure. Dana?!

Nae, I dana like it at all.

Diana is rather stately but also too heavily associative.

I'd go for Daphne, which has a kind of retro cool about it. I love Delphine, it's really pretty.

Deirdre would be just about OK, but very old fashioned, in Ireland. In the UK it would automatically be pronounced (as others have already said upthread) like Deerdree in Coronation Street - not nice.

FrancisdeSales · 17/10/2014 23:50

Daphne is a great name.

angeltreats · 18/10/2014 12:23

I met a baby Daphne recently. I didn't like the name before but it really suited her and she was gorgeous so it's grown on me.

My mum is a Deirdre. She's always loved her name funny enough, I think she'd secretly like us to use it as a middle name for our baby due next month if it's a girl, but she's got no chance! There's just nothing nice about it. Sorry mum, I do love you... She does sometimes get called Dee which I think suits her.

bealos · 18/10/2014 12:47

Love Daphne! (despite the Scooby Doo connection)

Deidre is a bit to Corrie for me.

Deirdre or Daphne, can't decide which. Deirdre Ann, or Daphne Helen.
