Can you give me your opinion on my list of girls names?

I love these names:
Seraphina
Tabitha
Millicent
Florence
Ophelia
Beatrice

DH hates them.

We both agree on:
Abigail
Faith
Imogen
Sophie
Lucy

But I'm not in love with any of these names. DH doesn't like any names which are too 'out there'. I don't want a name where there is a high probability that there will be three other girls called the same name.

If we like these what else might we like?

I don't think Florence or Beatrice are out there at all. The names you both agree on don't fit into a particular type for me (probably someone will come along who can typify them better than me!) so not sure what to suggest. Hope? Maltilda? Harriet?

bringbackfonzi · 12/10/2014 22:30

*Matilda, obvs.

bakingtins · 12/10/2014 22:45

The short list you agree on looks v similar to ours (we both liked 4 of the 5) and we went with a name from that list. The name I loved and DH vetoed was Miriam, we both like Beatrice and Anna but too similar to extended family.

In my three children's friends and classmates probably running to at least a hundred children under 10 we know vaguely, I can think of 2 called Abigail, 2 Faith, 1 Sophie, 1 Lucy, 1 Imogen.
I didn't love DD's name (I wanted Miriam, dammit) but Dh gets equal say so you may have to compromise. I love it now because it's hers.

AlpacaYourThings · 12/10/2014 23:04

To him Florence and Beatrice are too 'odd'. Hmm he likes names like Sophie Lucy Hannah Jessica...

I like Matilda, he doesn't. I don't understand why I don't get the final say!

The middle bit of your Venn diagram of names is a bit blah. That's not to say they're offensive, there's just a lot of them about.

What about-
Marianne
Maggie
Clementine
India
Claudia
Vivienne
Sylvia (nn. Sylvie, obvs)
Odette
Aveline
Eloise
Rosalie

Pandora37 · 12/10/2014 23:22

I don't think Abigail and Faith are too over used. Imogen is popular but not insanely so. Off your list I'd avoid Florence, Millicent (inevitably going to be shortened to Millie) and Beatrice as they're all very popular or on the rise.

How about:

Lucia with Lucy as a nickname
Violet
Ada
Francesca
Nancy
Erin
Gabriella
Georgia/Georgina
Esme
Harriet
Natalia
Felicity
Annabel
Martha
Lydia
Alexandra
Eloise

AlpacaYourThings · 12/10/2014 23:59

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I love Nancy as well (forgot to add it to the list) but DH has vetoed that as well.

DH likes Francesca but can't use it as its my sisters name.

We both like Madeleine but DH won't consider it because of the McCann connection which is annoying.

Really like all the names you've listed as your personal favourites.
However, as far as I was aware Tabitha, Beatrice and Florence aren't too uncommon. Coincidentally, there is a Tabitha, Beatrice (Bea) and a Florence (Flo) in my DD's class at school. I also know two other Beas. I would assume that with Millicent you're expecting to call her Millie for short, which also is a poplar name.

I really like Lucy - but would have chosen Lucinda for birth certificate and Lucy for short, also like Imogen - my friend's daughter is Immie.

Surfsup1 · 13/10/2014 01:38

Camilla
Lucinda
Charlotte
Harriet
Josephine
Rachel
Alice
Fiona (must be due for a comeback IMO!)
Louisa
Eliza

I like the "agreed' on names, except Faith.

How about, Clara, Emmeline, Eleanor, Amelie, Sophia?

mummybare · 13/10/2014 10:10

Helena (nn Nell, Leni)
Penelope (nn Nell/Penny/Pip)
Jeanette (nn Jinny/Jenny/Etta)
Elizabeth (about a gazillion nicknames!)
Marianne
Mariella
Emmeline?

I do like Imogen, mind you.

DecaffTastesWeird · 13/10/2014 16:48

I love these three:

Tabitha
Florence
Faith

elotrolado · 14/10/2014 22:59

Love Tabitha, like Florence. Beatrice ok, don't mind Imogen.

Other suggestions -
Martha
Fern

Squtternutbaush · 14/10/2014 23:08

Bizarrely there are a group of sisters at my sons school called Tabitha, Ophelia, Beatrice and Abigail there is a younger one called Hermione if that's to your taste?

I also like Eliza, Arianna and Annabel.

Squtternutbaush · 14/10/2014 23:10

Just to clarify I meant bizarrely because the family seemed to have a very similar list to yours, not that they are bizarre names :o

justhayley · 14/10/2014 23:18

I LOVE tabitha and Florance - Florance more so. There are quite a few where I love but generally don't think it's crazy popular in the UK

figgieroll · 14/10/2014 23:24

Flora Fleur Alice Cecile Cecily Sophia

figgieroll · 14/10/2014 23:26

Madeline is stunning, just go with it. Matilda Emmeline clementine

mathanxiety · 15/10/2014 01:45

Your favourite names are all a bit on the frilly side to my ear.

The agreed on names are not really frilly but I agree they're a bit 'safe' or even 'meh'.

There are a gazillion Sophies and Lucys about. Abby is a really popular name where I am. I'm sure it's short for Abigail. Faith -- confirmation is coming up here and every second girl has chosen Faith as her confirmation name it seems.. Imogen always seems too close to 'engine' for me. Imogene otoh, has a more pleasant sound, but that's possibly just me..

How abut:
Sabrina
Alexandra
Clara
Theodora/Thea
Miranda
Mirabel
Estelle
Cecelia
Calista
Cassandra
Laurel

AlpacaYourThings · 15/10/2014 18:06

I love Madeleine figgieroll I have just seen so many threads where posters have said they couldn't get past the MM connection.

Thanks for all the other suggestions, they are really helpful Smile
