Debating names for DD2. Current shortlist is below but some are out due to friends' names, some DH just doesn't like, some I'm not sure of. Can anyone suggest others that have a similar feel?

Cecily
Romilly
Marianne
Madeleine
Mia
Jessamyn
Cara

Is there anything Mia could be short for? Or anything that shortens to Mina, Mira or something like that?

Cecilia
Ciara
Samira

JessicaRRRabbit · 07/10/2014 13:16

What about Adeleine - we considered it for DC2 before we found out he would be a DS. Smile also Mariam and Merryn.

BlueChampagne · 07/10/2014 14:15

Wilhelmina shortens to Mina

Adelaide/Adeline
Samara/Tamara

minipie · 07/10/2014 15:06

Thanks

I like Adeline

Samira has the right feel but not sure about it for some reason...?

I really like Merryn but suspect DH will not (he doesn't like names he hasn't heard of and I doubt he's heard of Merryn) - however I will try him!

Ciara... I like it but surname starts with R and so I think it is a bit hard to say with the two R sounds straight after each other? same problem with Cara from my list.

I love Marianne. It could be shorten to Mimi (as could Miriam)

Pia
Scarlett
Isabella

funnyoldonion · 07/10/2014 19:58

I think you'd like the names Marin or Maren lovely meanings too x

BananaToast · 07/10/2014 20:01

Romy
Emmeline
Cora

baskingseals · 07/10/2014 20:18

I also love Marianne. Elegant and pretty.
What about
Miranda

Marguerite

Margot

Saskia

ARGHtoAHHH · 07/10/2014 20:27

Marianne is beautiful and reminds me of a beautiful song by Leonard Cohen.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 07/10/2014 21:05

My best friend is Mariamne, she's a lovely woman as well as being utterly beautiful.

I can't help but think it's the most lovely name.

Northernrose · 07/10/2014 21:08

Mara - Scottish name meaning of the sea

Mirren
Naomi
Niamh
Connie short for Constance

minipie · 07/10/2014 21:34

Ooh some good suggestions here, thanks!

Marianne is great but DH strongly associates it with a slightly bonkers old friend so says it's out. Might see if I can persuade him as it's a lovely name.

Have a Miranda in the close family already - shame as it's a great name. Same for Isabella.

Emmeline I really like, but DD1 is called something pretty similar.

Constance DH really likes, and I quite like, but I'm not a fan of Connie - any other nns?

Marina I like but DH just says "boats"...

Marguerite and Margot I like, but DD1's name is quite French, and we are not French so wonder if it would be odd to have two French ish names?

Saskia .. ooh. Maybe. Fits the bill definitely, but what about short forms/nicknames?

Mirren/Maren/Mara will probably get vetoed by DH for the usual "I've never heard of it, therefore it's not a name" reason Hmm

Mirabel totally fits the bill in theory, but I find it a teeny bit too girly/princessy?

Sylvia/Sylvie maybe? sister of Emmeline, although Sylvia Pankhurst's first given name was actually Estelle.

I've always loved Sylvie as a first name.

baskingseals · 08/10/2014 08:53

Try dh again with Marianne, I know how pesky they can be, I still think dc3's name should be Gabriel, but some people just have no style or imaginTion sadly Grin.
What about
Iona

Clementine

Anneliese might be too French though

Valentina

Roseanna

Kaya

marmaladegranny · 08/10/2014 09:22

Merryl??

minipie · 08/10/2014 09:56

Sylvie is good...wil add to the shortlist... though don't love it quite as much as some of the M names.

Annelise I like, too close to DD's name though

Kaya is my sister's dog Grin

I will try DH again when I actually see him in waking hours but he's not that interested in discussing names mind you I'm only 14 weeks Grin

Evelyn - ends in 'en' sound.
Roisin - if either of you have irish heritage
Camille - still quite French
Matilda - your husband's probably heard of this one!

Or how about Mariana rather than Marianne (I'd also suggest to flip the order if the names to Anne-Marie but I suspect that sounds similar to your dd1's name).

JeanChappa · 10/10/2014 22:41

Mariella? Some lovely suggestions above.

Yorkshirelassreturns · 11/10/2014 05:18

Jemima can be shortened to mima or mimi... Not sure if you've considered that. Good luck! X
